Help .....My 2001 25 hp wont go in gear

I afraid the lower unit is messed up. My 2001 25 hp wont go in gear forward or reverse.........I was trying to load my boat and when I put it in gear it just reved up but wont go.........I am wondering if the lower end went out or maybe some cable popped off..........any help would be appreciated

What type of motor, tiller?
Is it stuck in neutral or does the gear selector move?

Take off the cowel and check out the linkage. Does is look good?
then check out the controls.

remote...I pushed the button in to rev up the motor and it never went back in.....it is popped out like it should be but it wont go in forward or reverse

Sort of the same thing happened to me one night on the lake. '85 merc 18 hp.
After replacing water pump impeller, went fishing that night. While trying to move to another spot, pushed the remote handle forward but no forward, just engine reving up. Turned out the connecting clip between the shift shaft and the remote linkage had popped off. Took 2 hours to get back to landing with trolling motor. Got 2 new clips(one for spare). Works fine now.

It was the shift linkage clip .......It was off and the plastic end was broken.........Thanks

Yes..........I found the part at boats.net it was 10.00 for 5 of them shipped..........the mercruiser parts site wanted 12.00 shipping the other site was 1.75...........

I have a 2stroke, 1999 25hp mercury serial, # OG792283. I rebuilt the lower unit but, it appears I damaged the clip and cam that hold the shift shaft. How difficult would it be to replace the cam? Do I just give it a good tug, or is there a better way to remove/replace them? Part #'s on Crowleymarine are 823862 (lever backplate) and 8238632 (lever or Cam) . I hope this post stays on point.
