I have a 1999 200 johnson took it out several times last week ran GREAT. Took it out tonight started up (little tough when cold) idled out of the marina and gunned it as it was getting on a plane the motor JERKED liked I hit a rock or something then it planed out and I ran a few miles out cruised around 45-5000 RPMS. Stoped and fished for an hour or two started it up(little tough again) idled out for a minute or two then gunned it and as it was getting on a plane again it JERKED but this time it kept doing it over and over I have never seen a motor jerk so eraticly so fast like it was cutting in and out of gear at full throttle so I backed it off to an idle of around 1500 rpms and it ran fine slowly gave it throttle and got on a plane but soon as the boat planed off it started jerking again eraticly. So I backed it down to 1500 rpms and put putted home ran fine the whole way back to the ramp. What gives? I know it is going into gear fully and not jumpping out. Could it be dropping spark in and out a full speed? But if it was would it make the motor jerk that bad? ( I mean I thought the damn thing was going to rip off the transome it was jerking so hard) It felt like you where riding in a car and some one was hitting the gas then slamming on the brakes then hitting the gas then slamming on the brakes but times that by 3 or 4!!!!!

Re: HELP my johnson please

The symptoms you are describing sound like a worn clutch dog/forward gear.

The other day me and some buddys where out and one of there boats broke down, I gave them a tow in. So I had some weight on my boat, and was pulling my buddy who was loaded down. I guess this could have caused it. Is there any way to check this without tearing the lower unit apart?

Re: HELP my johnson please

Just double check by disconnecting the shift cable at the engine and putting it in gear manually. If it still does it, then suspect the dog/gears. The only way to check is to tear down the gearcase. The Universal Description for a worn dog is "it sounds and feels like like I hit a stump"

After reading the title, I thought the OP was having problems with E.D. :D

It also could be going into SLOW from an over heat and the horn isn't working or it's it got one bad ignition miss.

Re: HELP my johnson please

okay lets assume it is my trigger dropping a cylinder or two at WOT how can i check for it? Other than having some one at the back of the boat with a timing light at WOT with this thing bucking like a bronco. Would a simple output test with a meter show this? I'am very new to testing outputs and reading on the electrial stuff. But can rebuild an engine fine.
