Re: Help my Johnson

I cant seem to get this motor to run right
It takes some cranking to get it going.then after shut offand sitting wont restart.the bulb pumps hard, new carb gaskets, needle seat, rebuilt starter, good battery.I had it going fair but
in a garbage can got hot.after cooling no restart.im disappointed after all this time and money.thought it might be safty switch?Any ideas as to were to go next?

Re: Help my Johnson

No safety switch on that motor. It has a neutral safety switch, but it won't allow the motor to crank over unless its in neutral. If the motor cranks over but doesn't start you need to do some diagnosing. First check compression, then test for spark on all cylinders, then see if your getting fuel to the cylinders. Prolonged running in a barrel or trashcan is bad. The water heats up and then your motor overheats. Outboards are designed to have a constant supply of "cool" water available for the cooling system.

Re: Help my Johnson

Hi Walker thanx for input, there seems to be a switch on the Dist. cam that prevents the motor from starting if throttle is to hi.Also there is no neutral switch this engine can be started in gear.Im running in trashcan cause im tired of driving to the lake and sit at the dock tring to get this going.I think the overheating came from exast entering water pump.Still hav hard starting
im going threw everything on the motor i wont let this beat me.Once running seems to idle and run fine.Just real hard starting. We crused the lake all day and same cond. once shut off.It sux
wen your afraid to shut motor and be stranded.

Re: Help my Johnson

Thanx Dhadley The motor is turning over but not starting.I found the choke Sel. is not working.Ive been choking manually. When i first try and start
it seems to almost start right up but fails then i get the hard start condition, after some cranking and trying throttle settings it starts
and seems to run good and idle.after running awile ,shut off and then bump key and starts
right back up.after sitting awile on the restart
is the hard start condition.Any input would be appreciated i love this boat is fun but not wen
stranded.i hav another motor should i install it?

Re: Help my Johnson

Sounds to me as if it might be flooding from too much choke. I know mine doesn't need much more than a bump of the choke on a cold start. Don't take my advice over the experts here though ... I'm usually asking for help. ... but this sounded familiar.
Tom

Re: Help my Johnson

I think this applies to that old single carb --

After you choke it manually, are you putting the lever back in the middle (Automatic) position or all the way up to "Off"?

Re: Help my Johnson

Im putting the lever all the way up but it seems to fall back to middle.I put a screwdriver in to
hold it all the way open.
