Hello again fellow iboaters!

Today I have several questions about parts for my boat. I am needing to replace a few things and I have had excellent advice from you all so I am seeking your assistance.

My boat:

1987 Ebko Marine Monte Carlo 16' open bow, I purchased 5/04.

Hull ID: EBK19408A787
Mercruiser 2.5 liter Alpha One Sterdrive Transom Assembly # OB596884
Engine serial # B576723

It appears to be mostly made of stock components and rust :) (unfortunately this was a saltwater boat when I bought it, see my pictures using the link at the bottom of my signature).

I have replaced several components that I would not have attempted if it weren't for help from this post, so here goes:

1) Is there a thermostat in the engine? I wouldn't think so because it's seawater cooled, but I don't know for sure. If no thermostat, what is in the thermostate housing above the water pump (at least it looks like a thermostat housing)?

2) My fuel fill hose has been pinched between a bulkhead and the steering adjusting nut. I need to replace it and found Class 1 and Class 2 hose. One is $2 per linear foot and the other is $8 per linear foot. Which to use?

3) What size v-belt for the "alternator, water pump, crank pulley" do I need? I want to purchase a spare and keep it onboard.

4) Engine currently has a long napa oil filter. What type should I use? I have a book that shows a Sierra 18-7824 model 390690, is that the right one, or just stick with automotive?

5) I know what Quicksilver primer and black phantom spray paints are for..... but they sell a product alongside of these called Corrosion Guard. What is it? a clearcoat, an oily film like WD40?

6) My water hose from transom (just above the coupler) is kinked by the zip tie at the back of the motor holding it and a hiring harness to a metal ring, so I need to replace the hose. Should I just use plain old rubber hose for this, like coolant hose?

7) I have read many threads on champion spark plugs, and advise against using them. The only other type shown in my book is NGK, and they don't list which one is for my engine. What branch and model # should I use?

8) Almost any parts manual lists various applications for the part, such as: 110, 120, 140 (HP) and then they list 2.5L under a different part #, then sometimes they list GM 4cyl under a different one too. My question is, which should I stick with? I have a 120 HP (I think) 2.5L GM 4 cylinder.

Thanks in advance for your help, I know it's a long post but I wanted to get it all done in one rather than several.

Stay safe and we'll see you on the water!

Re: HELP Needed From Fellow IBOATERS

1,....Ayuh,....... Even Outboard motors have thermostats,..... If they Didn't,... They'd run Stone Cold.........

2,....I Don't Know,...... I got mine at NAPA,+ it says "Coast Guard" on the side of it,...... I think it's More Important that it's a "Grounded" hose,...... You Know,... With a Wire in it........

3,....This NAPA catalog says 18-15410,....41"s long,+ 29/64ths wide......

4),...NAPA filters are made by Wix,.... They're All I'll Buy.......

5),.... Don't Know.....

6),...That's Not a Simple Repair,.......It sounds like you're ready for an Over-haul back there,...... Change All the Rubber Parts,.......

7),...I Believe your motor calls for AC, MR43T plugs,....... AC's are the Only plugs I put in Chevy Motors..........

8),.....The Nomenclature changes with the Year,.....
Your's is a 1987,..... 2.5l....

Next Question,............ :D

Re: HELP Needed From Fellow IBOATERS

Thank you for the help.

#6 is simpler than I might have explained it (I hope). The hose connects to a plastic barbed fitting sticking out from the transom (on the inside of the boat) just above the coupler.

The hose slips on and is held in place with a hose clamp, and the hose runs to a fitting on the front top of the engine, held on with hose clamp. Looks like it will take 45 seconds to replace.

OOOoohhhh,........ I thought you meant the 1 Outside the Transom,..........

Ayuh,...... that 1 is Easy,........ I Think it's Bigger than 5/8ths".........
More like 1",..... it's Shimmed out at the transom plate.......

Refer back to Question #1,....... The Other End of That hose,.... Connects to the T-Stat Housing,........... ;)

Okay, that makes sense.

Yet another Q.... you mention that without thermostat the engine would run cold.... well when running on the lake mine stays just above the lowest setting. What should my boat run at, if you know. Thanks Bondo.

Most raw water cooled motors are run with 145* T-stats,.....You should be seeing 145*/ 170* on the Gauge,......... ;)
