Re: help needed to fit a vortech to a non vortech boat
Yes there are tons of posts on here including the one i asked a week ago with no replies. I read before i asked because the posts are long and filled with a lot of garbage. Anyway i just did it and it runs like a raped ape!! Love it. If you go the long block route as i did these are the things you will need to address:
1 your flywheel/coupler should be ok if its a 91 omc. Will be a 1 piece set up and bolt right up
2 you will need an intake. You will also possibly have to fabricate mounting brackets for things that bolt to your intake as they wont match.
3 WATER PUMP! A vortec has no internal bypass, i learned this from a sbc forum as i got no answer on here about that question either. You must plumb up a bypass from existing water pump pipe thread plugged fitting up to the new vortec intake right below the t-stat housing.
4no mechanical fuel pump flange on a vortec. You will have to go electric. Better anyway IMO. Wire it up on a relay to an oil pressure switch i what i did.
5 the water pump also will not clear a vortec timing cover because of the long protruding bolt that a grinder will fix. Also plug the bypass hole on the old style pump with a 1/8 pipe plug.
Do these things an you will love your truck vortec
