In need of help with a 1977 Johnson 6 hp outboard. I have posted a youtube link below that shows the problem I am having..You can can see by the performance of the motor that it labors badly when the hood is on...With the hood off no problems...I was told that it could be an exhaust leak so I checked for that and couldnt detect one so not sure what is happening..I have replaced plugs, wires , new carb kit, new fuel line, new fuel filter assy. I have ran out of ideas..I have ran the motor out on the lake on my jon boat and the same results..Has me baffled. Any experts on these motors have some ideas of what it might be? Much appreciated.

It looks like its being starved for air.
Powerhead to exhaust housing gasket could be leaking.
Exhaust covers could be leaking.

Nobody tired to install a little air filter on the intake hole did they?
I have seen his before, there is a little square hole below the carb, I saw a little filter there once.

To find exhaust leaks you can squirt fogging oil in the carb with the engine at high idle and look for smoke coming out from between powerhead and midsection.

Im sure your right about it being starved for air. I checked that hole below the carb, mine is round and nothing plugging it.

Someone had mentioned the shift rod grommet or donut down inside the exhaust housing..

Does that make any sense to you?

That was me, referring to the 9.5 that Grigsby was talking about the issues he had. This motor is much more simpler in design, it's more than likely the base gasket leaking, if not the exhaust cover. Pull the powerhead and check it out.

Yes I took the powerhead off and all looks good..I am now running it as I speak , took some of that Fogging oil sprayed it into the card and it seems all the smoke is coming straight out of the exhaust and nothing on top but will spray some soapy water to see if I can see a leak.

Another thought, happened to me once, make sure that you don't have a plug wire shorting out on the rear cover clamp causing poor running.

Yes checked on that as well and even went further to getting new plug wires and have them tied back with one of those electircal wires.

After spraying some of that fogging oil im getting it to run a little better but I know im not out of the woods yet. My luck will be two or three problems contributing lol

Could this be a carb issue alone guys? I just cant find anything for leaks in the exhaust. I think im grasping here, about ready to drill some BIG holes in the hood lol

Does it do this on the water?
These motors are notorious for sucking up their own exhaust when in a bucket.
Try running a fan over the bucket to blow the exhaust away and the problem may go away.......
EDIT: Never mind; just actually read your WHOLE post

Yes , ran it at the lake in my jon boat and same results.

Well something worked along the way , put a blower on it and she picked up power so we will see what happens out on the lake but that wont be for a few weeks...Thanks to all of your help guys , I appreciate it very much!
