Help!! only 2000 RPM's

Hi All,

I took the family out sunday for some tubing. After I launched, on my way to pick them up, I was only getting 2000 rpm's, wouldn't even get on plane. After trying again a few times with everyone on board, same problem, I decided to drop them off at a beach near my house. As soon as I dropped them off (I was alone then) took off like nothing ever happened, ran great.

Went out today after de-carbing and working on my steering, proud of my work on my steering system. Well....same problem, nothing over 2000 rpms. A few times it sounded like it wanted to go. Twice I stood forward of my CC and put it on plane and once it finally came up, seemed to be ok.

The only thing that has changed since it ran fine was that I got new gas. When I take off, it sounds like it is bogging bad, and will even stall out if I dont take the throttle back, like it is flooding. When I take off OK and go to 2000 rpm's, it sounds fine, just like it normally would at 2000 rpm's. During the whole time, my primer ball was tight. I also took a look at my carbs when I was out there. The flaps were wide open (horizontal).

This morning after my de-carb, I put new "Q" plugs in, gapped at .30.

Could I have put in bad gas, or is it something more serious?

Thanks in advance guys.
Scott

20ft Proline, 1983 200HP Johnson

dont think u could flood at WOT. sounds like the opposite to me ie fuel starvation. Fuel filter and fuel pump should be your 1st port of call. if all you did was change gas then you may have kicked up some crap in the bottom of the taknk and its found its way to the filter. Then timing; is ur timing doing what it should? the manual will tell ya.
good luck!

Got a Water Seporator on there? If so, check it. If not, get one. If all you did was fuel up and it starts running bad, I would suspect water contamination. If you can get a sample from your tank and put it in a glass jar, it will comfirm if you have water in the fuel, as it will separate.

Thanks. One fuel pump is brand new (2 weeks) the other "looks" new and I changed the filter.

I dont have a fuel/water seperator yet which I guess could be the problem too. I will check that Rick, thanks.

I have not checked my timing yet, but would it change that sudden like that?

It's possible if your timer plate is sticking, but seems unlikely that this problem is related. Check the timer base for smooth operation by having someone move the throttle from idle to full throttle slowly while you watch it. Should move smoothly to full advance. The motor does not have to be running to do this. I would still do the fuel check to rule that out. Simple to do and gives quick results..

EDIT: Did you use the old plugs after the decarb? Could have been the problem. Try it with the new plugs and see if it's better. Gap them at .040..

Leraning.....I just had a similar problem. You deffinetely need to get a fuel/water separator on that thing. I am not sure whether I had water in my fuel or if it had something to do with the new ethanol fuel. I have heard alot of guys having alot of problems with this new ethanol gas. The ethanol loosens up alot of crap in your fuel tank and cloggs things up. I took off my separators, which were from last season anyway, and they were full of sediment and junk. I replaced my separators and filled up with fresh fuel and my motors run alot better now. Good luck.

Thanks MMC, It all makes sense too, because yesterday when I was putting in my new sending unit, I was moving the tank around allot, might have drummed some junk up.

In addition to the Fuel/water seperator is there anything else I should do? Look at the filters at leasy would be my guess.

Re: Help!! only 2000 RPM's

Just noticed something. When I first came here I thought my engine was a 1985, and got advice to get the QL77JC4 plugs. I think I then found out my engine was a 1983, which the sparkplug chart here on IBOATS says I should use a UL77V or QL16V Surface Gap

Can you tell me what year my eng is, and if I am ok?

Thanks!

200 HP J5854641, model# J200TLCTS
