I have searched to no avail, so am begging for help.

I have painted my Merc cowl/top/etc TWICE. First time I sanded to bare metal, used self-etching primer, sanded, and painted (I think with Duplicolor rattle cans). Came out very orange peely - tried to sand it down but it just didn't look right so I did it over. Same result.

Rather than bankrupt myself in rattle cans, can I shoot over everything as-is with clearcoat and then work on sanding/polishing that coat to a shine?

Appreciate any advice.

One common mistake is to get too close and build up too much in one coat. Try wet sanding with say 400-600 grit to remove the orange peel. Avoid sanding through. Then coat with clear. Shake the cans allot. More than you think it needs. Then build up the paint layer gradually until it looks wet and stop. Use consistent strokes and spray flat across the surface, don?t sweep.

If your going to rattle can.. then heres a suggestion..

Shake .. then put your can in some hot water for 5 mins .. shake and spray.

Dont get too close ( you waste alot..but have a better finish ).
