I am driving 230 miles to pickup a 1971 evinrude 40 hp model 40152b. It is suppose to be a very low hour unit. Have seen many pictures and heard it run over the phone. I will be mounting it to my 13 foot boston whaler and running it in a garbage can to make sure everything is okay. It has a tiller arm and electric start and looks like new. QUESTION:
Anything i should be looking for to make sure its a good buy? I have read so much on how a motor can look super and idle and seem to run great but then you put it in the water and nothing. Should i see oil in the water when i run it? Any and all help would be appreciated. Also any info on this model or even pictures would be great.

You should run it on the water, not muffs. Best would be to run it on the lake for 30 to 60 minutes.
Check for water flow.
Check for overheating by placing hand on head for 5 seconds.
Check for water in the lower unit, after running it in water if possible.
Check for visual spark on all cylinders.

But i will only be able to run it in a parking lot we are meeting at. Its a long drive and our meeting point is out in farm lands but no lakes near by. I know it will be a roll of the dice but i was told he took it in to a shop and all that had to be done was to adjust the lean a little and it ran just fine. What is the correct oil gas mix?

Invest the $20 or so for a compression gauge if you don't already own one. It can be the difference between buying a lemon or a cherry!

Would Walmarts carry a compression gauge? As fas as oil when i run it in a can im sure there will be some, should it be pretty clear slick if any? No black looking oil i would imagine? Sorry for all the questions but im new to all this and the first motor i bought was just a ride i dont wanna go on again(read my other post!!).

You will have some oil residue coming out of the exhaust.

Compression test guage, maybe at Walmart. Or any Napa, checker, autozone, pepboys, larger hardware store, or a farm supply type store.

WalMart may not stock compression gauges. Check Autozone, Pep Boys, or whatever auto parts store is in your area. Any two stroke outboard will have unburned fuel/oil in the exhaust, and it leaves some gunk in a barrel when run. As long as the lower unit lube is OK, you should be fine. Hope you get a great deal! :)
