Clams (or others)--do you know of an alternative to the special tool for removing the shift shaft bushing?

Nicole Kidman?? Well, got very long red hair, tall and slim, but I wouldn't say Nicole Kidman, more Bridgette Fonda I'm afraid!

Right, my boat is a 1986 model which is where the confusion has occurred, the first owners name was written inside the boat, the year and the manufacturer, the same name was inside the engine casing, I assumed the engine was the same age as the boat, typical female, making assumptions!

It says Merc 402 on the top casing.

I'm in Cheshire, it's nowhere near London, or Scotland, but thanks anyway Damdan.

You're a great bunch of guys. Thanks.

Sarah

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Nope: but the little tool often shows up pretty cheap on Ebay - in an aftermarket version. that's where I snagged mine.

-W

To make a tool to remove the shift shaft bushing find a piece of pipe the same OD as the bushing. Cut the pipe square at the end and cut away two semi-circle pieces from around the perimeter. What you will be left with is two tabs 180* apart. Make the tabs the right size to fit into the notches of the shift shaft bushing. A heavier walled pipe stands up better. Slide the "tool" over the shift shaft onto the bushing and turn the "tool" with a pipe wrench, vise-grips, channel lock pliers or whatever.

OR .....

Buy the tool from a dealer or aftermarket supplier.

Looks like you can buy the tool from Mercury. I found it on the Mercruiser site for $18.15. I'm sure it would make more sense to try to find it through a Mercury dealer over there, with shipping and all--and the time involved.

Here is the link for the Mercruiser parts lookup page:
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/partsByNumber.asp

I put in part number 91-23033, the part number from my manual. It showed that to have been superceded by part number 91-31107T.

*********

As to Sarah and her resemblance to the avatar posted here, I can only say it doesn't do her justice. Now mind your manners, gentlemen!

Hi Bill

Been trying to email you but your mails are getting sent back as unknown!!! Hope you look on here........

Thanks for the email, I checked out the link and I'll give it another go, I had visions of having to strip the box down as I was struggling to get the shaft back in, but if he can do it, I'm sure I can!

All is well here, a copy of that manual is in the post to you, let me know when it arrives. Our post is pretty slow!

Thanks again for that link, it's going to be really helpful.

Much love

Sarah

Woo Hoo!!! Just managed to retrieve the circlip with the help of a cheap old telescopic magnet that I thought would be of no use whatsoever!

I'm sooooo good!!!!!

(Apart from having to look up the spelling of circlip....!!!!)

Now all I have to do is get the shaft back in!
