Help Please/sterndrive gear oil check

Can I just check my gear oil without changing it? It was changed last season and only has maybe 5 hrs on new lube. can I just unscrew the top vent screw and see if there is fluid and if so do i check it with the drive level ,up or down? Thanks By the way mercruiser 3.0L Alpha one

Ayuh,... If you unscrew the Drain,+ dribble out a smidgen, as long as it's Not water,... You're Good...
Then remove the Vent to see the Level...

Ok thanks so do I level the lower unit, up or down? Or does it matter?

Ayuh,... I'd do the Drain with it Up, so you can reach it,+ See if there's water...
The Vent I'd do Down, or level...
