Re: Help pls. Water problem with my boat

A guy could always block up the trailer with jack stands, put the plug in the boat and FILL the boat with water, , not to the top but just to cover the floor. Then look for where water is coming out of the boat. Been done before, , works pretty well. just need to open all the access points, hatches etc and get her dried out real well, , soon.

Re: Help pls. Water problem with my boat

update. i went out to the water the other day. i spent about an hour on the water. the inside of the boat stays dry. i did some checks and i noticed and saw water coming in or dripping into the boat comes from the splash that come on by where the engine is mounted. outboard engine. that water that comes up there enter the boat through the holes where they pass the cables/wires and steering wheel cable. how can i seal those holes or do something to stop the water from coming in to the boat. i notice that the more people in the boat the more i water comes in coz that back area where the engine is mount sit low on the water and water comes up alot. that has two outlet holes to let water out but the splash cuases water to go through the through holes(holes or area where the cables/wires passes)

You would have to be taking on quite a bit of water for water to come in through that cable hole and then also to get water all the way up from the floor from there. If water were to go in there, it would go to the back of the boat right into the bilge. Agreed on other posters, we need some pics.

It sounds like your boat is really low in the water, maybe too low. The lowest part on the transom where the engine clamps on should still be above the water at least 6 inches or more even with people in the boat. Your boat may have some waterlogged flotation foam that is adding weight to the boat keeping it too low in the water.

There is a splash well right in front of where the engine mounts, it will have drain holes in the transom. Water that splashes by the engine and comes thru the low cutout on the transom is supposed to just kind of roll around in the well then drain out. The low cutout part on the transom where the engine mounts is what I am referring to, and the splash well is in front of that and goes upwards to keep water out of the cockpit. Unless there are high waves then not much water should be splashing in.

I don't believe it is your primary problem but those access holes for the steering cables and fuel lines etc should have rubber boots over them. I've never seen even the most austere budget boat without boots over those pass-through holes. Then again, we're talking bayliner, eh? ;)

It sounds like you're in over your head (or soon will be literally) and should bite the bullet and have a professional at least examine your boat to see if they can spot the source of the leak(s).

If the water is coming in through the holes for the fuel and steering lines you have other VERY serious issues. How many people are you squeezing into that small boat? Seriously, you should seek help from a professional in your area. Just on a hunch but how do you slow down your boat? If it is trimmed wrong and you take it out of gear quickly you could be swamping your boat with your own wake! Good luck.

Water can get in via a bad fitting/unsealed rub rail

Let me see....unsealed rub rail?? That is one low riding boat or is about to sink. Rub rails are normally half way or more up the side of the boat. The gunnel can have one. The two halves of a boat where they come together is also where there is a rub rail to seal the two halfs.

Water coming in a rub rail? I'd just let it sit, sink and make a claim!

Re: Help pls. Water problem with my boat

I remember when I bought my boat 5 years ago, nice, clean and only had 90 hours. Even did a water trial and bought is for 10k cash from one mechanic to the next. Than I started boating and the bilge keep coming on and ski storage area under floor had green mossy water. Cleaned it out and pulled plug (which previous owner said you don't need to pull, let the bilge do it). Then I learned not the way to do it. Upon inspections I found the plug housing was about to fall out and quickly removed that and sealed it up and tightened the 2 screws. That cured most the problem than I would get water only sometimes and couldn't figure it out. Sometimes it only happened after planed back to the ramp to pull out. I even pluged the ski storage which swamped out and still got water in it. So after reading about the rub rails I pulled one of the sections off and discovered I had twice as many holes drilled through the boat than what was needed for the screws to attach the chrome on rubber RUB rail. I sealed up all the holes and haven't had a problem since. Somebody at the factory was a newby and messed up on the pattern or loved to drill holes. Even though the Rub Rail was well 2-3 feet about the water it was coming in on rough water or when on plane.

Hey Boobie, Sometime, under way, lean over the gunnel and watch where the water impacts as it rides up the side.

If it were me, I would put the boat in still water and just let it sit there for an hour. Check to see if anything is getting wet inside the boat.
If nothing gets wet, that should rule out leaks at anything at/below the water line.
