Help Replaced Everything Still Overheating Burning Up Impellers!

I am super frustrated with my 90 Bayliner Capri, 120 HP L-Force Engine. Bought it about a week ago...have sunk quite a bit of money in it already. The engine runs really well, but for some reason the darn thing overheats after running for 5 or 6 minutes. I've replaced the impeller twice...replaced the thermostat...checked for clogged water lines...when I hook water directly the hose on top by the engine the thing runs like a champ. However, when I put the muffs on and try to give it water from the lower unit, that's when after 5 minutes or so, the alarm goes off and it gets hot. Any ideas? or thoughts...?

Have you run the engine with the boat in the water? In some instances, I've read that the engine should be submerged to the point that it is over the level of the water pump. The water muffs don't seem to work well with my engine for some reason (of course, nothing seems to pump water on my engine for some reason!).

Yah, I've put it in the water...unfortunately it did the same thing. How did you get water pumping in your case? Have you gone so far as replacing all the hoses. I'm thinking of doing that next.

Unfortunately, mine's still not pumping; I'm having similar problems that you're having. It sounds like yours isn't getting any water to the pump at all. After removing my lower unit, I put the muffs to the water intake to see if it was getting water to the pump itself. I had to press the muffs to the lower unit to get it to seal enough to get the water up to the pump. How does your pump housing look? It may need to be replaced. Also, make sure that the water pump connects properly to the brass / copper tube that runs the water up to the power head. It's hard to see on mine so you may need to watch it as someone else installs the lower unit.
Have you checked for clogs in the brass / copper tube up to the power unit? I forced water up with a hose to make sure water came out of the tell-tale hole.

yeah with burning up impellers that quick you not getting any water to the pump your problem is in the passage way through lower unit to the pump . find the clog and your problem is solved and dont use muffs on these force engines get a plastic tub and fill it then trim motor down until exhust snout abou 2 inches above water and start that way so there is no ? that u are gettinf the water supply need . hope this helps but i would start looking in the lower foot (cored passage way )

also on my 1985 85hp it dont pee water out any holes on side or back telltale holes it spits a little and i mean very little it pees out exhust snout so if it does pee out exhust when u hook up water hose to water pipe it will not come out top it comes out exhust and alot people made this mistake they will have the water hose up there and it is hard to get to and water will be going through motor and they are looking up at the two holes on back of caseing and they feel water hitting there hands thinking that it water from the hose but really it is water coming out exhust and that is normal.

just a little reminder , this is what mine does and yes i have this stupid , costly mistake the first time a was working on a force engine.

take off the lower unit and put it in a bucket of water and spin with a drill ....until you can get it to function like that you are wasting your time ......so you ran it for 5 min with no water from the tell tail or upper exhaust holes ??? put some washing up liquid in the water it lubricates the pump better ....

very good info about soap water fucawi . it will also wash out and help clean any corrosion . Use Dawn that seems to stay slipper and it also cuts through grease and grim
