Re: Help! Steering rod seized inside steering tube

Hi there sorry to jump on the end of this thread but I have a similar problem with my steering it travels good the left but when I turn to the right it jambs up about 3 inches from full lock I was hoping someone couldshed some light on what might be wrong (IE) would something get stuck inside the outer slide casing or would a very small bend and I do mean small bend in the tube be the cause ??? any help much appreciated

By the way do not use heat.
You have to know whether the rod or the tube will expand more when heat is applied. Same thing with dry ice, knowing which one will contract more !! and as pointed out earlier you may melt something that you really should not.
Good Luck.
By the way a lot of tool rental places have slide hammers. I made my own many years ago and I do not use it often but when it is needed it is a lifesaver. If you need a basic design for one let me know.

hello dont know how you going yo get this question..have same problem steering stuck in tube...can you give me a basic design.......would it be same as a tyre bead breaker with an adaptor to the hole in the shaft sticking out......

Re: Help! Steering rod seized inside steering tube

problem was simple to fix.....just keep bashen the crap out the the bar inside the tube ..........the one with the hole in it ......squirt some juice into her to help loosen her up ..........wd40 we call it in australia. used a extension bar to drive through the tube..........works like a beauty now.....

Re: Help! Steering rod seized inside steering tube

I had the same problem with my outboard. I stored the boat with the steering rod fully extended (this was previously recommend to me by a boat mechanic, many thanks to him!), so there was only about 3 inches between the the rod-end and the side of the boat, so no room to tap. I let penetrating oil soak in for about a day, then I took a 6 foot long 2x4 and wedged it between the boat and the rod end, with just a little bit of leverage/pressure it broke loose and pushed the rod a little way into the tube, then I was able to work it loose from there. Warning! if you try this be extremely careful to not bend the rod, if you bend it, you're screwed. Good luck.
