Should be a tag around the transom clamps some wheres.REASON I say Johnson is that its white on the inside and is a pin drive model.Might be off on hp as its hard to tell by scale.18 hp?What size is the boat?

I too believe that is a 25hp Johnson of the mid to late 80's design. If there were no tiller it could also be a 28hp. The 25hp was offered in both the exhaust thru hub and the pin type.

Anyways, somewhere on the engine block should be a round silver disk with numbers on it. Write those numbers down and then contact BRP thru their website with that info. They will get you the year and model for it. they did it for me on a 1994 30hp. It took about 2 weeks for a response.

I'll look tonight thanks guys.
The boat is a 14'4" and the tag on the back says it can handle up to a 25 horse so you guys are probably right

Several points of note say it is a late 1970s/early 1980s Johnson 25hp. The coils are the first generation CD type coils with the wires integral to the coil and the green painted frame. It is not a pin-drive lower unit, but it is based on the earlier lower units that were pin drive. It has a splined propshaft, with the exhaust exiting above the propeller, making it a 25hp. Also has an air box over the carb, which went away after 1981 model year. So, your motor is a 25hp Johnson, no newer than 1981.

Chinewalker is mostly correct. You can narrow the year down further buy checking behind the prop cone .If there is a shear pin its a pre 1978 motor ,if its splined its a post 1978.So pin is 77 and below and splined is 1978 and above.

I should give credit where credit is due and thank Chinewalker for the interesting info about the older 25,s as I did not know that just by the looks isn't enough to determine pin drive .Your never to old to learn something new!

Thanks. You are correct, 1978 was the first year of the spline drive on the split gear case motors. I forgot that there was the one-year changeover on those after they went to the 32-cube powerhead. They must have had an issue with folks spinning the pins out with the new big block powerhead! ;)

Sorry I guess I should have referenced the thru hub or split case design which is the obvious feature to see rather than the shaft design which can't be seen with a prop attached..

So is it a good one then ?
I paid $250 for the boat the trailer, outboard an engine stand for the outdoard, and got titles for everything.

For what it's worth, I prefer them. If you got the whole setup for $250.00 then you did very well. It's well worth twice that and that would still be a great deal.

Great ... I still can't find any # on this thing but I did get it running today but I think it needs the carb cleaned out. I mixed the gas 50-1 is that a good mix for this Engine ? I pulled The propeller off its held on with a cotter pin and then a round nut then there's a shaft that propeller slides onto.

I took a video of it someone told me the make sure that it was it had a good stream of water coming out of it but I have water coming out the back and out of a hose underneath is that OK to have water coming out both locations ??
