Hi folks. I'm new to this boating lark and have aquired a 3 meter inflateable and a Mercury outboard.
It's the outboard I need a little help with please...
The model is Mercury 45, 4.5hp 2stroke, short shaft, serial number 9139802.
Can anyone please tell me what year this motor was made, and what fuel/oil mixture ratio I should use.
Also, can this engine be used in salt water and where can I get a cheap service manual from please.
Many thanks for reading this. Any help/info would be very welcome.

Cheers

Re: Help the Newby please

If you look at the very first "sticky" thread on this forum (titled "What year is my Mercury out board"), you'll be given links to 4 sites that have listings of outboards by HP, s/n, and year. According to one of those lists, yours is a 1977. According to the others, yours doesn't exist. I'm new at this stuff myself, and can't believe how screwed up the serial numbers are.

Can't help you with anything else, although if it can't be used in salt water, I'd love to know why not. You might check your local library or eBay for service manuals.

Re: Help the Newby please

Your motor is build in Belgium. The fuel-mix should be 1:50. It's not a problem to use this motor in salt water, just make sure you make sure the salt water is flushed out after use. Buy a motor-flusher and you'll be fine. Have fun:cool:
