From an add in "The Fish Sniffer" an out West fishing newspaper.
by Chaplain Mark O'Sullivan
In March'04 I sold my 1995 Skeeter bass boat to Kevin M. Phillips for $10,925. Kevin took the boat home and promised me that a check would be Fed-Ex'd overnight by his mom. Unfortunately Kevin never held up his end of the agreement, and ever since then he and my boat are no where to be found, but many promises, excuses, and lies remain. Kevin is 5'5", weighs 220 pounds, has brown hair and eyes, tattoos on arms and neck, and was born on 4-11-1974. Kevin has been seen in the boat fishing between Fresno and Shasta on numerous occasions. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any information that could help me get my boat back. Thank you for your assistance.
Boat Description:
1994 Skeeter model #140,gray/silver metal flake with red accent stripes,115hp. Mariner(gray)engine,CF#8400NL,and black single axel trailer license #1EN4804. Boat has red letters "ECO" on back.
Contact: Chaplain Mark O'Sullivan
Home: (916)652-9635
Cell: (916)826-7631
Email: mosconsult@sbcglobal.net

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

That's nasty!

Some people are too trusting, and it comes back at them. We all do it. I've just sold a fishfinder, and the guy's given me a cheque. Will it clear? On this island, a bouncing cheque is still a rarity, because each cheque has the persons ID on it, and he gets island-blackballed if he even does it the once - so bouncing cheques are not on. I'm fairly safe.

But to let a guy take a $10,000 boat without ANYTHING as security - it beats all sense!

Why would you give someone your boat before he paid you for it? 5'5" / 220 / tatoos on his neck... ok, I'll say it. B.S.! I wouldn't give a priest a boat in trust let alone a guy who looked like that! Nobody's that stupid. It sounds like this guy is looking for sympathy money.

stillfishing,I agree.

magster65, "sympathy money" I hadn't thought of that.

What was interesting to me was how trusting O'Sullivan was. Let the buyer and seller beware.

Are you kidding me. If that didn't send up a red flag and have alarm bells go off then I don't know. Sad story, but what was he thinking ? Bet he won't do that again.

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

So the guy signed over the title? We're supposed to call him if we see it, not the sheriff? It's not been reported stolen? OK technically it's not been stolen, it was sold and now it's a bad debt he's trying to collect. Sounds like a scam to me. Especially since he's using his title "Chaplain". Wants you to think he's both a serviceman and a minister maybe?

Being president of ANYTHING doesnt make you a good decent trustworthy person. Remember a guy named Clinton?

This story is over a year old. Theres way, way more to it than just what this guy wrote about.

Onviously WAY more to it....I mean he has the guys name and approximate location for crud sake. Why couldn't he file a civil suit or something. Hell just call the cops!

Right, being president isn't the issue. Since he is obviously into bass fishing his story was more likely. I don't think he's looking for a handout, he chose a very targeted offline publication to get the word out.

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

First of all the least that should have been done is contact the cops and report fraud if not grand theft. I know he signed the title over but there should be a way around this. He has not contacted an attorney. Like you said he has targeted offline publication. If someone stole my boat I'd be shouting it from the rooftops, I'd have and ad in every newpaper in three states, in short I would do everything I could think of to get the word out about what happened. That is, if it really happened that way. I would like to know how many people have called him and possibly donated money to "help compensate him for the terrible thing that has happened to him." I would also like to know how much he has collected. Funny that after a year he posts this story.

I'm pretty cold, but I have virtually no sympathy for adults who do this sort of stuff. Sure the thief's a dirtball, but the seller's an idiot (unless there's something I don't know). Just MHO, of course.

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

In Georgia we call that theft by deception, it is a felony. If the boat was registered by the owner and he reports it stolen, and someone else trys to register it that throws up a red flag.

I was a deputy sheriff and thats about the only way we could catch a boat thief unless you just got lucky and spotted the boat somewhere.

I agree that the whole situation could have been avoided if the seller had used a little common sense.

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

On the odd chance this story of the worlds dumbest human selling his boat to someone that promises to send a check later has any basis in reality....
I want to reference a number of prior threads where people offered to conjure up all sorts illegal ways to register boats they had no title to... - i.e. - buying titles from junk boats, changing the HID #.....see any connection here?
If you don't have a title....you are NOT the owner.

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

Had a Skeeter Redman Tournament boat stolen from a dealer I worked at. A customer of ours was approached about buying it at a local tournament and went to see it. He noticed the #9 on the windshield that he had seen when it was on the lot and called the cops. They found the stolen boat in THE INSURANCE ADJUSTER'S GARAGE!

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

hello bomar 76. in referance to your comments on bogus titles and swapped HID#, the boats were mentioned were small 30 yr. old boats, not big buck items. when boats of that age are stolen, they are towed to remote mud flats and stripped of engines and gear and the hulls left to rot ( they are all around pine island sound ) want some? When you bought a sears gamefisher in the 60,S you paid them and got the boat,no title just a receipt. I dont approve of anyone taking anothers property but i do recommend working around the system if you have no other choise. regards FRED.

Re: Help this guy find his stolen bass boat.

Fred, you are referencing 2 boats from a thread a a week or so old.
Search the site and you will see beau coupe threads from people wanting to title newer boats that were obviously of dubious heritage.
