thanks for being so helpful, i am not a weakling, it is more the way the boat is arranged in the back, to get a hold to pull it up. maybe everyone has this issue? and sloopy I am a woman so having my wife do it unless i was gay is out of the question.

Hi, Fleur.

Boy, the Smart Alecks are out in force today. What a pain in the butt they can be!

There is a device sold by several boating supply houses that attaches to your engine and gives you plenty of extra leverage to tilt you engine.

Good luck. :)

Fleur,

I have seen this device in both Cabelas (www.cabelas.com) and Bass Pro Shops-not sure about their URL.

Basically, it is a device that you set on top of your motor and it has a long handle attached to it. It gives you better leverage for lifting.

If you rrally want to get fancy, you can get a power lift from an outfit called CMC. It bolts to the transom and the engine mounts to it. It works electrically to lift your engine. They run about $350.00 for a 25 hp. capable unit. You could also use it with a new engine-it stays with the boat. These are also available in the catalogs I mentioned above.

Yes, the new engines are not a whole lot lighter-especially the four strokes-read heavy.

Fleur, I don't want to be over simplistic, but is the tilt shaft well greased? While it's on the trailer, lift it by the foot[for leverage] and see if it tilts smoothly without binding. There should be a grease fitting on each side of the mounting bracket for the tilt shaft. I had an 18HP of this vintage and I remember it being a big, heavy motor. Maybe it is just the weight and the position. Good luck.

I seen one advertised once in a fishing magazine and then made one myself for about a $1.00 and scrap that I had around the house. Didn't look real good but did the job on a Mercury 65 HP. Don't pay a arm and leg for one!!!!!!!!!!!

I just bought a Motor Tilter at Boatersworld.com for $40. Makes it very easy to raise motor

Hi Fleur

Most of the newer 25 - 30 HP motors lift quite freely and are held on up position by a small lever. On yours, the friction created by tightening the nut on the tilt shaft is what holds it in any position. Thats why its so hard to move. I experience quite the same on my 1974 25HP. You can experiment some by loosening the nut at the end of the tilt shaft a bit and see if it improves. Just be sure it doesnt fall to down position. Maybee the shaft should be greased, but it takes a disassembly to do it proberly.
