Re: HELP? wiring ignition switch

I am not sure a car solenoid will work on your motor. From your post you say with the new solenoid that in start position you have 12 volts on yellow wire on solenoid. When this happens you have a short between the battery lead and the starter lead. The motor should crank when this happens. When you disconnected the two big wires from the solenoid did you try touching them together. This should create a start. It sounds like your solenoid is working. When you are measuring voltage what are you using for the black or ground lead on your meter. YOu should be able to touch any metal screw on your motor for a ground. Here is a block diagram of what your electrical should look like. block diagram <br />One lead going to solenoid is the postive terminal of the battery the other is going to starter. If you touch these two wires together does starter crank motor? Be careful doing this. You dont want to be too close to motor when it starts and you dont want to accidently ground the battery lead.

Yes,If I touch together the 2 large red wires at the starter solenoid, the motor will turn over. To ground the ignition switch for volt testing, I am using the control box as a ground.

Re: HELP? wiring ignition switch

Then try cleaning the leads and contacts as good as possible. Make sure the connections are tight. I cant see why it dont start other then it is not a marine solenoid. Even though the solenoid passes a continuity test for some reason you are not getting high current through it to start motor. After cleaning everything and reconnecting it put your meter across the battery and see how low the voltage goes when you try to start it. It sounds like it is wired correctly. Also measure the voltage across the solenoid when in start position. It should read 12 volts when not starting and zero volts in start position. (one lead on positive battery lead and one on positive starter terminal.

Test of the battery terminals (12vdc), when the ignition is in the start position (12vdc). Solenoid test across the large terminals (12vdc), when the ignition is in the start position (12vdc). Neither test moves the meter when the ignition key is turned to the start position.

Re: HELP? wiring ignition switch

Well I took the motor down to the marine shop, cost me $35.00 to get the ignition wired right. Now it will start by the ignition. Mechanic said I was lucky that I did not burn up the electrical system, since I had 12vdc at the motor(not sure where he meant 12vdc). But here is the proper wiring for the ignition switch: B-Red; M-white; I-blank; M-blue & black; S-yellow; C-green. I hope this helps someone in the future and saves them some aggravation. THANKS to Eurolarva for all the assistance, I really appreciate it, SY

My manual shows that the wiring the mechanic did is wrong. The only thing I can think of is that my manual only goes to 1984 and something got changed. I am glad to hear you got it fixed and It was a steal at 35 bucks. Also wonder if the evinrude switch is the same as a chrysler switch

Re: HELP? wiring ignition switch

i called bayliner and they sent me the wireing diagram for my boat and it included the inition switch diagram, you didnot mention the boat, perhaps your boat manual cover the switch as bayliner does. i have a 89 force 125, and the bayliner book handy. the 85 and 125 are wired the same switch to the engine
