I am not sure a car solenoid will work on your motor. From your post you say with the new solenoid that in start position you have 12 volts on yellow wire on solenoid. When this happens you have a short between the battery lead and the starter lead. The motor should crank when this happens. When you disconnected the two big wires from the solenoid did you try touching them together. This should create a start. It sounds like your solenoid is working. When you are measuring voltage what are you using for the black or ground lead on your meter. YOu should be able to touch any metal screw on your motor for a ground. Here is a block diagram of what your electrical should look like. block diagram <br />One lead going to solenoid is the postive terminal of the battery the other is going to starter. If you touch these two wires together does starter crank motor? Be careful doing this. You dont want to be too close to motor when it starts and you dont want to accidently ground the battery lead.
