Re: Help with 2000 V6 lower unit disassembly, please..

Here are my pics.
http://photobucket.com/albums/a385/jquest_/

IN order.....Forward gear, dog, pinion, trust washer(on rear gear facing dog), rear gear.
Ok,talking to you guys....the gears have normal wear and tear. BUt that trust washer!! I believe that may have messed my unit up. If the trust washer on the rear gear is eaten away...wouldn't that cause a shift( forward away from the pinion)? I believe that is why I'm getting my grind/whinning noise. I believe the gear may have separated from the pinion a little. I believe if I replace that thrust washer and redo the shaft( shimming by a pro shop. I know when I'm over my head). THat should cure the problem. And of course... have to get new bearings.

Are you planning on replacing the gears and the dog?

what is your opinion? I would really appreciate it. They are worn but they look like they can still go for some time.

ok I"m back. Took the shaft to a marine tech and got it shimmed correctly. I have all my parts. Question is..I have johnson sealer for the gaskets. Do I use that or should I use some permatex sealer? What do you guys recommend??
Thx!!

If you already have the factory recommended gasket sealer, why are you asking about Permatex?

Because I am asking for you opinion - being that you constantly do this kind of work. The Johnson sealer is what I originally bought when I replaced my impeller a year ago. I wanted to see if that was good enough to stay with it.
WHat the factory makes or sells is not always the best option. BUt from your response...I take it you recommend the factory sealer over the permatex. Thank you for answering my question my friend. :)

Re: Help with 2000 V6 lower unit disassembly, please..

ok boyz!! I"m in the home stretch. I pressure tested my unit last night. I took it up to 15psi and put a timer on it. It will hold the 1 psi level difference for 3 minutes, while you rotate, push and pull the rods and lever. But eventually the pressure does go down. I sprayed some WD-40 on the shift shaft and I noticed once in a while a bubble would pop out. When I replaced the o-rings on the shift shaft..I just popped the new ones in.I don't believe I saw in the book that I had to put sealer on them....seeing how tight it is in there. The shaft has to move so I would think it would make it harder. Am I ok to proceed with the vaccuum or do I have a small leak I need to take care of it? Any tricks or suggestions would be apprecited. Also.... when I saw the bubbles...I unscrewed the shaft and cleaned it , rubbing it with my nail, making sure the shaft was smooth with no salt or anything that might cause a ring not to seat correctly.

Remove the shift cover and the 2 o-rings, chances are there is debris, salt, corrosion, etc. in the edges of the o-ring grooves.

Inspect the shift rod closely in the area where it seals. On high time motors you can see and feel a wear mark there from shifing. Look closely for corrosion pits or nicks also.

If you still cannot get it to seal, then there is too much wear in the cover. A new shift cover has been redesigned with a guide bushing and a single o-ring seal.

TIP - mix some dish soap and water in a spray bottle and use that for checking leaks.

5006241 for $24.80 is the number for the shift cover assembly. You will need a new gasket also.
