Hey everyone out there that could help me, I would be greatly appreciated. I have a 1970 25hp Evinrude that I bought and started once and ran fine for about 5 minutes. I just wanted to be sure it would start fine. I then got back to it the next week and it would start up and run for about 5 seconds and then not start again. If I would wait a little bit it would then start again and die. If I put starting fluid in it it starts and dies now. I just rebuilt the carb with a friend of mine who went through marine mechanics so he knows more then I do. Everything looked good though we replaced the parts anyway. It has new spark plugs and gas lines are good. I now can not get it to start. I can not eve get the ball to fill up on the has tank to the fuel pump. Also fuel pump is pumping air out of it and when I do cover the small wholes on the pump then air goes into the carb. Has anyone had this issue or something similar and any suggestions would be great. I am getting ready to replace the fuel pump though I would not want to if I do not have to! Thanks for any advice on this issue.

Welcome to Iboats forum.

It is real easy to hook the wrong hoses in the wrong places on the carb. Also I have heard of even experienced mechanics putting the float in upside down, it is easy to do. Hope ya get it running.

If the primer bulb does not pump up, try another hose and see if that cures your problem, if so you need a new bulb. If the fuel pump leaks you need to repair or replace pump. Try squirting fuel mix into carb and see if engine runs, if so you have a carb problem.

Thanks for the no starting fluid tip. I was told this after I did this also and it verifies that is a bad thing. Did not know that! Also thinks for the tips on spraying mix into the carb. I will do that tonight or tomorrow when I can get to it and see what I get. Also the bulb I will see if I can take another take over and try it. I have one that I know works on my father in-laws boat.

Sounds like bulb. You can disconnect fuel line at carb and squeeze it to confirm. I had to start the motor with the tank elevated and a bunch of pulls one time out on the lake when the bulb's check valves quit.

Re: Help with 25hp 1970 Evinrude

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the tips on this. Come to find out after checking the carb and then replacing the fuel pump things still did not work. I also replaced the bulb and fuel line from the tank and no change. I then tilted the tank down so the gas went to the line and pumped the ball and it pumped fine. I was then able to start the motor and it runs like a dream. I have not replaced the tank yet. I am going to attempt to replace the piece on the tank and then if I can not find it replace the tank. Again thanks for everything. :)
