It sounds like the motor that I just bought a month ago. There should be a manufacturers plate on the base of the engine that will tell you the model number. Mine is 60esl-70D. Which means a 60 hp esl model that was manufactured in 1970. Hope this helps. You should be able to go from there.

I just purchased a 1971 60hp with the HydroElectric shift. We'll all have to stick together as we get them running!

Whoever told you about the capacitor doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. The closest thing to a capacitor is sealed in the ignition amplifier, and doesn't "burn up". However, you can destroy the amplifier by improper or ignored service procedures.

You can get a factory service manual with wiring diagrams and complete service procedures from www.outboardbooks.com If you are going to own one of those things, you need the book. Many/Most dealers won't touch them, so you are on your own.

Mine is a 1972 50 hp esl, first set of remote controls were bad, the shift switch was broken due to forcing shift lever without engine running, previous owner (idiot).

The arm sometimes breaks off the Johnson shift switches. Has nothing to do with running or not running. The guy might be an idiot, but that is not evidence that he is.
