help with 79 merc 80hp no spark

i just purchased a 1979 merc 80 hp outboard s/n9208182 i cant get a spark from it there is no power to the solenoid when ign is on can this be the prob,but when holding in the crank position there is power please help as this is my first outboard,i am a mechanic but these are different from cars thanks in advance.PSalso when i check this serial number i cant find it to match with an engine?

Marc, Those motors do not have a battery powered ignition. The stator charges the switchbox, and the triger fires the switchbox into the ignition coils. You need to get on DolphinMarineservices.com or CDI.com and look up the troubleshooting procedure for a Merc ADI ignition.

BTW - On that motor, the ignition is killed when the orange wire on the switchboxes is grounded. You might discnonnect it at the switchbox and see if spark returns.

thanks alot for the help,i have replaced the ign switch as it didnt feel to positive when turning it now i have a beautiful spark on cylender 3 and 4 but nothing on 1 and 2,when i put the coil wires from number 3 onto 1 and 2 these spark so i guess it cant be the coils what else can i try best regards marc

Marc, you didn't hear what Chris was saying but here the test from CDI use it, Parts are way to expencive to just throw at a engine.

thanks for the advice,i tried those sites but it came up saying page unavailable.as i stated the ign switch was broken and replaced and got cylender 3 and 4 sparking and i switched the blue and red wires as described and still ony 3 and 4 spark so it must be the switch box.were would i find 1 cheap as im on a tight budget and do u have a wire diagram for this engine best regards marc all the help is much appreciated
