Any word on the outcome from the shop?? Mine runs fine at low speed but bogs out and quits at high speed. I'm guessing its the high speed coil on mine. I'm curious what a shop charges for the swap. I was told $150 labor. The timing part scares me and I would have to buy a flywheel puller anyway.

Check the output at the + side of a coil with a DVA equipped multimeter
Just to clear up for those that don't know, there is no digital meter on the market with built-in DVA. The only meters with built-in DVA are analog meters such as a Stevens CD77.

If you have a digital meter, you simply need a DVA Adapter to plug in to your digital meter.

DVA Explained

you should have 200+ volts at idle. If not replace the stator.
The stator needs to have a minimum of 180V DVA both connected & disconnected from the switch box at cranking.

And since this is a 6 cylinder, there are two stator low-speed charge coils. Measure Blue to Ground, then Blue/White to Ground.

Re: Help with a '89 mariner 150

Just a quick question here...not a hijack.

At the transition Rpm from the low speed windings to the high speed windings...is it normal for the engine to run a little rough? I've had two of these same vintage Merc/Mariner 150's and they both acted the same way...a little rough in the 1500-2000 rpm range...idled fine and ran out high rpm fine.....

I also have a 89 Mariner and at about 2/3 throttle on the plane it also feels like it is missing a bit. It doesn't help your problem but there may be comfort in knowing your not the only one with this problem. I wonder if there is a fix for this?
