I need help from anyone who can give me some ideas on why my Mercury doesn't start. When I turn the key the starter runs but doesn't jump up and engage the fly wheel to turn over the engine. It just spins there so nothing happens to the engine. This problem just started to happen. Any help would be appreciated. My email address is <br />Thanks. keithtauber@hotmail.com

Keith, pinion gears on starters dont go up for a couple of reasons...one, they get sticky on the shaft. a liberal dose of WD40 will get it moving...if really stuck a rap with a hammer an screwdriver will unstick....second, your battery is dead or dying, not providing enough power to engage the drive....bad battrery connections will act like this also...you need a minimum of 9.5 volts at the starter terminal under load, then you can eliminate a supply prob. after that, perhaps is time for a new starter...good luck
