"I also bought the fuel lines to the gas tank we are putting in. Talk about expensive $27 for a 10 foot piece of 3/8" $24 for a 6 foot piece of 5/8 and $30 for a 6 foot piece of 1.5" ."

You could have just went to your local Lowes store and bought the 3/8 and 5/8" fuel line for something like $0.30 per foot. I have done that a lot of times to attach fuel tanks and water separators and what not. Its a lot cheaper that way. One time was working on a Evinrude and there was something like 6 small pieces of fuel line and there was a part number to them and they were like $15 per. We got the same line at Lowes for less than 2 bucks, we just had to cut it to the correct length. I think sometimes these part stores just cut tubing to the specified length and slap a part number on it and charge %1000 percent more than what its worth.

I was told that there is a differnce between the regular fuel lines and the boat approved type. I was told that the regular fuel line let vapers excape thru the rubber. The boat approved one does not. The marine fuel lines are stamped with "approved for marine use." I was also told that when you get your boat inspected by the coastguard, if you don't have approved hoses on your boat it won't get passed. There is a difference in the hoses. The marine ones are a lot thicker. I was thinking that, when it came to me doing all this work on this boat. I didn't want to see it go up in smoke. Also if I want to sell it later, it would be nice to have it coastguard approved.

You're right, Dan.

Marine fuel line is very specific in type, and it's expensive because of all the tests it has to pass (including the "does it have the word 'marine' stamped on it test") and you won't pass a CG inspection without it.

More to the point, using the right fuel line will add significant safety to your boat. FYI, it's not about vapors leaking out through the line (that's related to some new evaporative emissions requirements) but the marine hose is designed to withstand open flame for a certain amount of time without melting and spilling more fuel into a fire, which is the important thing.

For those of you wondering why you've heard many people recommend use of "ordinary" fuel tubing on boats, there are different standards for above deck and below deck installs. Above deck you get away with a lot more.

In summary, your fuel line, fuel filler hose, and gas tank are not good areas in which to cheap out on a boat rebuild if you value your skin. Just take care and make good measurements, maybe even lay out some cheap tubing to test your line run and measure length before you buy the real stuff.

Thats not a lot of drain holes for the splashwell, I have 5 1" drains on mine, you seem to only have 2. Consider your splashwell goes from gunnel to gunnel. Its a lot of cubic area to have full of water...waiting to drain before the next wave hits.

Rubber under alum tanks is not good, it contains carbon which sets up galvanic reaction. I didn't see any pics of the tank, if it sits on cross planks then a thick bead of 5200 on each plank is all it needs to hold it.

I also didn't see vent hoses for the tank area or are they located at the stern? They are required for sub deck tanks.

How is the transom wood?

Re: Help with a new project, Please.

Well it's been a while since I last posted. We have done alot of work on the boat and have even gotten it in the water. We installed a below floor gas tank, mounted and wired the motor, ran the fuel lines, installed the plumming for the livewell, installed the CC, replaced the steering system with a NFB, installed the bilge pumps, and tightened up all the rivets, applyed gluvets and 3m 5200 to all of them. The two of us worked over 340 hour on the boat. We used it for a long weekend as a test drive. We had 5 rivets break, one fell out. we also had a fuel line problem. somewhere there was air getting in. We pulled it out of the water and took it off the trailer. We found the rivits that were messed up and replaced them. Also we replaced a section of the fuel line. The ball had a slight leak in it. we put it back on the trailer and took it for another test run. It worked great. We have a little cosmetic work to do. Other than that it sea ready. I have to place the gages in the CC and we need to put some redwood along the sides. Here are some pictures of the progress.

I am pretty sure that you need two hose clamps on all fuel lines. The boat is looking good, enjoy it:D
