I have a 150 Mercury Black Max XR2 1987 with a stainless steel prop.. I havent had the boat long but I cannot figure out why it cavitates when takeoff... here is what I do have.. measuring straight down from the bottom of the boat to center of prop it is around 4.75 inches... and the only numbers I can find on the prop are M-24.. after looking it up it looks like the diamater of this prop is only like 13-1/4 inches... and it shows on the prop wizard I need 14-1/4 x 23 pitch.. can someone help out do I need to lower the motor and get a new prop or just get a new prop and see what happens????

Is cavitation like a vibration on take off? If so, mine does the same thing and will anxiously await a response.

If it is thats not what mine does.. mine just acts like it wants to get on top of the water then revs up... like it throws all the water away and doesnt go anywhere... so I have to let off and ease into it and when it gets up it will go just fine...

Are you asking about cavitation or prop ventilation?

truthfully I dont know what it is... its one of the two.. its when the boat is trying to turn over to get on top and it seems to push all the water away from the prop and it cant catch, so it just wraps the engine and I gotta let off and ease into it...

UPDATE ON PAD TO CENTER OF PROP SHAFT... 4.75 INCHES...
