I need some help with a remote control box. My throttle will not engage in the forward or reverse gear at all. It is like it is locked up. I am usually pretty handy with stuff like this, but to save my life, I can't get the darn thing apart. It is a 1993 90 hp Evinrude but not sure what kind of controls. It is not the square type that bolts to the inside of the boat. The mechanism is on the inside of the wall and handle on the outside. Have to push a button toward the bottom to throttle engine without engaging gear. Hope that makes since to someone. Any help appreciated.

Re: Help with control box

The "button toward the bottom" should be a piece of flexible rubber or plastic.

Take that out....gently as not to tear or break it.....this should reveal a nut that holds the handle to the internal mechanism.

Undo the nut and remove the handle.

This should allow you some visual inspection.

Best case is a nut has come loose where the cable attachs to the mechanism.
Worse case would be the shift/throttle cables are froze up with corrosion.

Depending on the manufacturer, installation/service procedures are often available online.
Teleflex would be the first place you start, as they are the makers of bazillions of remote controls.

Cavat: maybe

Your making progress!!

Sorry, but I can't be of much more help, as the system I am familiar with, is not a side mount, that has the inner workings behind a bulkhead.
How you might get to those inner workings is beyond my pay grade.

One thing does come up.....did the shifter/throttle control work fine before this last attempt?

If it did, I would highly suspect frozen and corroded cables.

no, it just started locking up after being hard to shift. It is not the cables. Has to be in the control box, but I can not figure how to get the dang thing apart. Off to the shop I guess. thanks for the help....
