Hi guys sorry about two post's like this. The short of it is, my 1972 125hp johnson started good and shifted when I played with the fwd rev switch, I knew it was broken so I mickey moused it to work. I took it in to get a new water pump put in, now when I turn the key the engine won't do anything. I know that these engines default to drive and won't start. The mechanic put in thicker oil which I will change back to type c, Is there anyway to bypass the fwd rev switch to start it, and even a way to test the key swtich. I don't know where to start or what to do, for some reason I'm just freaking out this time and am having a hard time keeping my thoughts straight. thanks.

Get the manual and read it, things will become clear. There is always a way to jump something out to make it work, but without the diagram in front of me I can not guide you through it.

Re: Help with electric shift please!!???

The '72 shift switch incorporates a start in neutral only feature. That means the neutral button has to be pushed before it will crank.

So, if your switch is busted like you say, you can get it to crank by bypassing the start in neutral feature. There are two white wires going to the shift switch. Unplug them from the switch and connect them together. That takes the push button switch out of the picture as far as cranking is concerned. Then it should crank anytime you turn the key, in whatever gear.

Now that you got it cranking and running, how are you planning to shift it?

THANKS IMPORTED F R, I put the two white wires together and the engine turns over with the key, that's half the battle. Thank you very much, I'm about to put it on the muffs and rev it up, I'll report back in a bit and let you know how it goes.

so it starts and it sounds great, but now your right import f r, I have no way of switching gears. At least now I know the mechanic didn't screw anything up inside the leg. I've got a line on a set of new controls so that will probably be my next step. thanks.
