Hello All,

I just bought my first boat. It is a 14' Mercury RIB.Looking for ways to mount seats without screwing into the floor. I am wanting to mount some blocks to the floor, and mount seat pedastals to the blocks. Problem is, I have no experience with this sort of thing, but would love some pointers/advice on how to proceed. I do have the help of my Dad, who has done some fiberglass repair on canoes. But neither of us have experience with anything like mounting to the floor.

My plan is to screw the seat pedastals to the blocks.

Thanks.

How are the deck panels 'secured' to the rest of the boat? It's not a typically fastened down deck is it? Pix might help someone make some suggestions.....

The above link is a great resource, and where I got my inspiration. Attached are pics of the bases I am using. Still in the middle of the project, so no finished pics.
You make peanut butter( search for friscojarrets on you tube, easy to follow instructions) PB them to the deck then glass in.image.jpgimage.jpg

Good stuff Guys. Thanks.

I will try to get some pics up this weekend.

As a note: my boat has a fiberglass floor.

Since I'm not familiar w/ rib's: Is the glass deck INTEGRAL to the boat's hull? Not just a fiberglass deck laid into/onto the top of the hull & not really fastened or held down?

The only 2 inflatable boat's I've used were Zodiacs & the wood deck was just sitting in the boat. Although it really needed to be installed before the sides were fully inflated. Once installed they could be removed w/ some effort & the sides had been inflated.

As long as the deck is firmly attached to the hull, just be very careful of where you put screws.....

Yes, the deck and hull are one piece.

Good info here. I plan to do the same thing to my Hydrostream when it gets warmer. The old seat mounts were screwed straight into the deck and looked ugly as hell.

Yes, the deck and hull are one piece.

So the fiberglass hull is your deck ? .. or is it that you have a deck liner that matches your hulls inside ?

Thanks guys. Still working on getting some pics up.

The boat has a Non-skid type floor with a little "roughness" for traction. Will I need to sand this down smooth before I try to proceed, or should I be good with the roughness on the floor?

Well .. to do it right you should contact Merc for modification suggestions and not us.

IMHO this is the only way to start.

I could recommend some suggestions on grinding and glassing inside and out for your ped location .. but I dont know the security of the deck joint at that point.

I would think that you would need to spread the load out a little more than 12" square.

This would be considered a structural deck mod IMO ..
