Yes I would think it would be extremely handy. Any good ideas for pulling those big springs?

I've always had good luck with a pair of Vise grips.

Hey juicegoose, just looked at those pictures in your 1st post again and then looked up that model number. 1st thing I found on shopevinrude.com was that model number comes up as a 1990 30hp. I then compared it to the 1978 Evinrude that I had and they are basically the same and unchanged much in design. Some of the part numbers are changed.

Looking through both parts breakdowns, I do not see 2 pins listed that connect all the linkages. Shows only 1 pin that crosses to both sides. If you are not in a hurry to resolve this I could go to my brothers and look at that one as see if there are actually 2 pins or just one.. There are also a number of springs for the tilt and the shallow drive. You might want to look at those to see if any are stretched or bent.
