I have a 1977 johnson 70 hp. I have been working on the motor, I didn't know when the last impeller was done, so I decided to do it anyway. Upon taking the housing off I noticed that there was no seal installed as i have installed here also there was absolutely no gasket sealer

second the impeller looked to be in great shape.

I rehooked everything up today and started the engine, water was shooting out the front seap hole but nothing coming out of the top two holes. I then placed it in a bucket to see if I would get better results. the same happened.

I didn't run the engine for long because it seemed to be getting hot, no alarm but was hotter than it was before I changed the impeller. I took the lower unit off again and dissasembled the unit. Here are the photos after I took it back apart, can anyone see any issues?

One thing I can think of is the impeller inside the housing.
It should be taken out and laid on the base of the drive shaft with a small pin sticking out of the drive shaft that the slit in the impeller will fit over. Then lower the impeller housing onto the impeller while turning the drive shaft clockwise by hand while easing the housing over the impeller and into position.
While tightening down the screws holding the housing in place you must continue turning the drive shaft clockwise. That way you know that the impeller vanes are bent in the right direction and you also know that they are not caught under the housing.Make sure that the tubing is in place in between the pump and the engine and that it actually is inside the grommets both at the engine and at the pump end. That is the part that I missed in your pictures.
Go to the bombardier site to make sure that you have all the parts and seals for the pump.
Good luck.

Did you replace the thermostat and pressure relief valve? The two top holes in the mid section are relief holes which under noraml conditions should only produce water flow when the engine is in water and up to speed and the pressure relief portion of the T/stat assy. is open. Make sure that no excess sealant has made its way into the cooling system as it could cause obstruction to water flow.

and you will have pretty much covered you cooling sys, add tell tale
or waterpressure gauge ,and then check restrictors in under heads between the cyls if ya have probs ,sounds like a lot to do. but your cooling system
is critical i toasted a motor or 2 behind cooling probs good luck

Everyone,

I found the problem, When lining up the lower unit, The feed tube off of the water impeller housing, did not connect with the feed tube that leads to the powerhead. Boy do I feel stupid. This should solve my problems. I will let everyone know when I put it bck together tomorrow.

Where is the liner for your water pump housing?

i have tried to get this part, and the part does not fit, the part is stamped with the # but no luck. It is a modification to the existing housing. did not come on the original one, this is what my manual says.
