Hey All //

So this winter I bought a Kenwood marine 10" subwoofer with amplifier. seen here

It's running off of a JVC KD-HDR70 stereo seen here

Having some technical difficulties. The subwoofer sounds dirty, muddy and not as "it should". It does have power however the sound is absolutely horrible.

1. The deck has 3 pre outs on the back, subwoofer (sw), front and rear. I get no sound out of the sw pre out, however I do get sound from the rear and front pre out. I have a low and a high pass filter options on the deck, subwoofer on and off, as well as a slew of eq, gains and level adjustments. There's no option to tell the deck to route sw frequencies to the "SW" pre out. I only have two speakers hooked up in the boat as well.

From the amp, there are two channel speaker wire outs that are connected directly to the subwoofer. Two sets of (-/+) on the subwoofer.

2. Should I run a power source JUST for the amplifier? I have the power tied/spliced into the power line that is connected to my stereo. Or, is power, power?

To get sound out of the SW RCA plugs turn subwoofer on. You might also have to turn the level up.

As for muddy sound, make sure you have the speaker wired correctly. If you have the voice coils wired opposite to each other they will fight each other and create issues.

Re: Help with Kenwood subwoofer/amp install

Run separate switched and fused power 8 gauge or better for the amp.
Look closely at the amp manual to determine if it is bridgable.
If it is you will connect + of one channel to one sub wire and - of other channel to other sub wire.
Make sense so far?

Edit: The crutchfield site states its a mono amp and dual voice coil sub.
It will be correct to wire one output of amp to one +/- set of sub and other output of amp to other +/- of sub.
Double check deck for sub on/off/level settings.
Be sure to start with a sub crossover setting around 100hZ or a little lower because you may not get much for output if it is set too low.
Also be sure sub xover is not too high.
Deck should be adequate to power boat speakers.
Any clearer now?

Re: Help with Kenwood subwoofer/amp install

Thanks guys!

I'm thinking it is a power issue and will run a lone power wire for the amp. The boat is having the engine serviced for the spring and will get it back this weekend. I'll report the subwoofer update then!

Thanks!
