I just bought a used Craftsman 6 h.p. lawn mower for $75.00 and it is suposed to be self propelled but it is not moving when the handle is pulled into position. I know nothing about lawn mowers other than they cut grass. Where do I start trying to se about fixing, or for that matter finding out why its not working. Thanx in advance guys.

Have a look-see underneath the mower and check the v-belt...

Maybe the cable that puts it into drive is disconnected or broke?

Oh yeah - disconnect the spark plug before you go poking around...If it starts up on you while you're poking around, it's gunna hurt REAL bad.

Re: Help with lawn mower

If by not moving you mean the self propel I would work down the linkage that from the handle and make sure it is connected on both ends...as jsfinn mentions many times they will disconnect at the handle. Next if it is a craftman I am pretty sure they are all front wheel drive and have a drive box on the left front wheel. I would take the cover off the box and make sure the belt and everything was connected. If all this looks alright most you have a bigger problem and would need a new self propel. I have worked with mowers for quite a few years and most of the time with similar problems it is just linkage problems.

Good Luck

Pikey

Re: Help with lawn mower

Thanx guys, this freakin site rocks...... from boats to cars and fishtanks, yard work, politics, religion and now even my lawn mower there has always been someone that has come through and at the very least tried to help out or teach something to me and others. Im hopeing to figure it out today as my yard is quite big and on a hill so being self propelled is very importiant to me and my back. :)

Re: Help with lawn mower

Ok guys I opened up the plastic box to the left of the motor where the drive belt is and when I used the " gear shifter" I noticed that the cable attached to the gear lever did not move so, when I looked into the gear shifter I noticed it is busted and the cable is no longer attached to the shifter. It is year 2000 model Craftsman 2 eager-1
Does anybody have any idea on how hard it might be to find parts? If i call sears would the be able to get parts for it?
