Re: Help with my business

A couple of things, look up houses that were just sold and drop by with a flier, the most likely haven't gotten someone yet.

Me and my g/f personally, we toss advertisements in the trash.

We did get our driveway resealed after driving by a company for the following reasons:
1) A lot of the sealing companies put these disposable cardboard cones w/ their name and number on it.
2) The work sold it self. Even though we could have gotten someone cheaper to do it, we liked the work this place did so we gave them a call.

Re: Help with my business

Well first off, congratulations on your business. I have more respect for small business owners than just about anyone. A couple of thoughts. Are you set up as an LLC to deal with those lawsuites mentioned up top? Some of what my wife first did when she started her consulting company some years back was go in to various businesses and bring them back up to profitability. One of the companies she did this for was a large turf care company. One of the issues they would have was to get in hot water for chemical tresspass when the workers mistakenly fertilized the wrong yard among other issues. As for the website, at first glance I liked it. Then I realized I really can't read your logo and there are lots of small grammatical errors. Yes the pictures don't necessarily give the best reflection. Are the pictures of the cut grass just cutting jobs or are they also turf management jobs in which case the brown spots don't do you any favors. I see brown spots and I think the person used a dull blade on the mower. I see it all the time around here and I'd never use that particular company again. I also didn't like that you haven't done a seasonal update and removed references to holiday lights now that the holidays are long past. I hate reading about the holidays in January.
I personally like to deal as local as I can with the small owners who can keep their overhead low. I get those monthly coupon books in the mail too and would likely use them if I needed their services. I think the best way to get business is to network. My wife doesn't have a website but networked the heck out of the phones when she started with just the thought she'll never work for another again. She literally went from "wow this is a risky move to walk away from a paycheck" to "what do we do with all this money" all due to networking, ambition and drive. In your case, I would be involved in every community activity, club, school related activity I could. There is no replacement for networking. We have a realtor locally here and he is as hometown of a person as you will meet but is in the Billion dollar club. He has made likely 10's of millions of dollars over the last 10 years and now employs dozens of people. He was my son's little league coach and you'd never pick him out of a crowd if you didn't know him but is genuinely a nice guy which helped.

As far as advice, this web site is excellent: http://www.lawnsite.com/index.php

I found when I was putting in my water feature, lots of info.

I agree that lawnsite.com is a great resource and if you want to plow snow, then go to plowsite.com for a great wealth of info on snowplowing.
