I bought a first boat, got it running this last weekend on Friday. Now I'm needing to know the model, the plate where the model was is gone and all I have is a number stamped on what looks like a freeze plug by the cylinder head. The boat has electric start and manual shift. got some pictures to ad and will with my phone pics I took. Was wondering about the number on the plug, think it is a serial #. 2246624.

Welcome aboard iboats
The number on the plug is a Serial #. Probably not impossible to trace info with it but...
You figure 68 - 72, there are many differences in those 5 model yrs. Actually the 43.9 cubic inch 40hp electric start and Mechanical Shift was offered from 1960 thru 1976. There was a major design change in 1971.
Pictures would help a great deal

It is not impossible to trace with the serial number, but unfortunately, Johnson's are usually aged by the model number associated with the motor.
