The first thing you need to do with your new engine and drive, is to get the Merc serial numbers for both and post them here so we can ID things for you. Those numbers are used for everything, so keep them handy.

Service manuals.

Drive.

I'll need an engine serial number to get the right engine manual. I can also use that number to determine wheter it's a vortec.

Spark plugs, again the serial number is needed, as for plug wires, any high quality silicone lead set from a local car parts shop will do the job. The rotor and cap will need to be marine grade.

The engine should already have a water sep filter on the starboard side, at the front, just under the exhaust manifold.

No, it's not a Vortec engine. You can tell by looking at the intake manifold. You engine should have 12 bolts holding the intake on. The Vortec engines had 8.
The valve covers are also way different. The Vortec are a lot wider, are composit not steel and they say Vortec on them.

The manual you need is here, Manual #18

Yes, the fuel filter element should be replaced. Yearly. and when you remove the old filter, pour it into a clear container and check for water.
