Gremlins...they can never just leave stuff alone :p

Been going through my lower unit on my alpha one gen II and the book had said that this should be replaced with the water pump seals, and of course replace the seals beneath it. Well, naturally it didn't "pop off" like the book said it should. I have broke the little slots out and now have no way to grab a hold of it. Maybe I should have let a sleeping dog lie, but its too late now. Was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions on how to get this thing off?

This is mine before I broke it. Another reason as I wanted it off is that it looks like the shaft has been rubbing on it and wore it down some. May just be part of the shaft but if it is worn, I can see about fixing it.

Gently tap with a small chisel to remove upwards
Drill 2 1/4 inch holes 1/4 inch deep and pry up with suitable tools
You dont normally just replace the seals, a complete unit is easier

Thanks for the tips.

What do you mean by complete unit?

The part your trying to removes comes with the seals already installed, less of a hassel ,just remove the old, install the new.

The new "yellow" carrier comes in the pump kit! It's pretty expensive that way but here ya are!

Re: help with seal carrier in lower unit

After a long hard fight getting this thing out. It acted like it was glued in there. I drilled holes all around it trying to get a bite on it with no success. So I took a thin bladed knife with a wooden handle and hammered it around the outer edge of it to break whatever was holding it. I then sharpened my pry bar real good and doing so also heated it up, which made it hammer into it like butter. Once you get in around the bottom edge keep prying up and hammering the pry bar in and FINALLY it popped out.

My advice Bob, if it looks ok, and you dont have water in the oil then leave it alone. Replace the impeller and gaskets that you can get to easily and call it a day.

The only reason why I am replacing mine is because I have not seen the boat run, so whatever I can replace while Im there Im going to replace.

Know whatta mean?
