Re: Help with shift interrupt

Just in case you can't come up with a solution to make the shift interrupt work you CAN install a Volvo SX drive without replacing the transom assembly. Volvo has a conversion kit that includes everything you need to do the job including an engine mount water pump (Cobra has drive mounted impeller).

I believe the conversion kit sells for around $995 plus the drive.

Good luck.

Jeremy

Thanks Jeremy, any idea on what a new sx outdrive and controls would cost?

Well gents, looks like the bobtail plug is the ticket. I shorted it with a 470ohm resistor, and I could hear a significant drop in RPMs. Does anyone sell a micro switch built into the control cable?

NOPE, your best bet is to use your old cobra setup.

Re: Help with shift interrupt

what about rigging a little button the shifter and hold it while shifting?
I know this is a little off topic but how did switching from a 6 cylinder to a v-8 effect performance/weight distribution?

Re: Help with shift interrupt

I just finished the micro switch add, basically the same thing as what you were suggesting but it's a roller switch that is mechanically activated when you shift into forward or reverse. It seems to work out of the water, but I haven't tested it under load (keep your fingers crossed ;) ) As far a performance and weight distribution, because I was replacing a 1988 v6 with a 2001 v8, there is little to no difference in weight ( I think the new engine is within 50lbs. ) and there is no noticable difference in how she sits in the water. From a performance perspective, the new 5.0GI is a dream come true. No more throttle pumping and hard starts, not to mention the extra 80 or so horses I picked up. The switch did also require a significant change in prop from 19 - 28 pitch(and I'm still not sure I have it proped correctly) The shop manual says WOT it shouldn't exceed 5000 RPMS, I've run it wide open with three people in the boat and it was doing about 55MPH top end at 5000 RPMS with three people in the boat. Does this seem about right?

Re: Help with shift interrupt

I hope the switch works out for you. My bluewater has a very tired 4.3 in it now. I have a 5.7 merc mag sitting in my garage I was hoping to get someones feedback who had made the swap before doing it myself. I think I'll go ahead and do it.
Thanks.

Re: Help with shift interrupt

Thanks to all, things are working pretty well. (shift linkage still needs a little tweaking) The micro switch attached to the old shift linkage is doing the trick.

On another note, while boating this weekend, at about 3/4 throttle, the SLOW kicked in started to beep and dropped the RPM to 2500. I looked at the gauges and noticed she was running at 200 degrees  I shut her down, raised the out drive and jumped in the water to see if I had damaged something. After about 20 minutes, I lowered the outdrive started her up and cruised slowly. The temp immediately began to drop and all was well, even at WOT. I suspect I sucked something into the water intake while fishing close to the bank? Should I be concerned? Can I assume all is ok?
