Help with trim - 115hp 1970

I've got a brand new used 1970 115hp (inline 6 cylinder - 1150 model) that I'm trying to get ready for summer. There are a number of issues and I'm sure that I'll be posting about them, but right now, I'd like to get the trim working.

My dashboard has three trim buttons, one of which is a toggle for up and down. When I push the buttons, I can hear the pump unit running running, but it does not move the motor a bit. The pump is inside the boat and has a square or rectangular base. I take it as good news that the pump wants to run and I'm hoping that there is a "usual suspect" that I can start with.

If anybody has some suggestions with where to begin, I would appreciate it.
Thanks,
Jim

Check the trim release konb on the pump and make sure it's screwed all the way out to engage the valve in the pump. if that don't help check the fluid in the pump

Re: Help with trim - 115hp 1970

Thanks. The trim know was to the right. I turned it to the left and nothing changed. I'm going to try the oil next. The lable says use 20 wt. Is 10w-30 acceptable?

Also, please dowuble check me that I'm using the buttons correctly. I've got three round buttons, stacked like a traffic light. The top button (red) is marked "UP" and has trailer written underneath it. The middle button is half red and half green. It is marked "up" on the red part and "out" on the green part. It has "trim" written underneath it. The bottom button is white and has "in" written on it.

To raise the motor, I have to push the top red button and the red protion of the middle button, right?

Thanks.

10w30 will be fine over the years Mercury has recommended almost anything that was liqiud.
Yes, thats the way most work, you trim limit switch is stuck or it would go part way up on the center button.

I don't know if my switch is stuck, I can hear the pump motor work if I press either button. The problem is that the motor won't move a bit.

Once I figure out where to add the oil, is there a proceedure for bleeding the lines?

Re: Help with trim - 115hp 1970

I added oil (it took a bit) and the trim will now raise and lower the motor a little bit. It will raise for about 2-3 seconds and then the pump cuts out. This moves the motor maybe a foot or so. The white "in" button will lower the motor. I can do this over and over, but the motor wont go any higher.

Are the stops mis-set? If so, where are they and how do I set them? If it sounds like something else, please let me know.

Thanks again for the help. I really psyched that its working at all!

Thats the way it should work the trim limit swtch stops it, at that point you need to use the top 2 buttons to get it the rest of the way up. The pump should be filled with the engine tilted all the way up.

Re: Help with trim - 115hp 1970

I think I got it figured out. The top switch was corroded, so it was only moving up as far as the middle switch would allow. I cleaned the switch and the motor seems to travel further. Thanks for mentioning to fill it with the motor up; I wouldn't have known that. I presume that I should fill it until oil starts coming out of the fill hole. Let me know if I'm wrong.

While I've got your attention on this motor, does it have a thermostat? Its not peeing and I'm planning on replacing the impeller, but I thougt it could be a thermostat issue. I seem to recall reading though, that this motor does not have a thermostat.

Thanks again,

Jim
