Hey there people! I’m hoping that someone can help me.
I have a 1990 Evinrude 88 SPL.
It starts fine first time and after taking it for a spin then shutting it down and leaving it for 15mins or so, it won’t start up again. On the rare occasions it does start again it will click into gear, and then as soon as I apply any throttle it dies out.
So far, I have…
Taken carbs off, cleaned, replaced main jets, floats and gaskets.
Changed out the gaskets and diaphragm on the fuel pump.
Installed new ignition coils, spark plugs and spark plug leads.
Installed a new starter solenoid.

New fuel line going from tank to engine.
I’m almost at the end of my tether and considering taking it to somebody that actually knows what they’re doing, but thought I’d have an ask on here first.
Look forward to hearing from y’all!

Yeah, I think the impeller is fine. There is a solid stream of water coming out the side

I agree with you , time to make an appointment at a shop.-----Note----A healthy tell tale does not mean motor is cooling properly.----The water from the tell tale has NOT gone through the motor.-----Your shop can explain !

This just happened to me. Horn was going off but figured it was a fault because it was peeing good and the water didn’t feel hot. She finally shut down on me. Took the thermostats out and, yep, jammed up. 100% not functioning. I don’t think any damage occurred, thank goodness.

If the engine died because it was hot, it likely occurred because the Piston and Cylinder ran out of Clearance. Lack of Clearance is what causes Scuffing/Scoring of the Pistons and Cylinder Walls

Actually a very poor Design, as it provides Conflicting Info, when an Overheat Alarm is sounding, The Tell Tale should be located further down the Cooling System, like maybe above the Top Cylinder(s)

The tell tale is an indicator for the water pump on those.----It does not indicate proper cooling !-----And most folks today will buy / own a boat and know very little about how to care for them-----Same as yesteryear.----Most folks learned about their outboards through an empty wallet !!!
