You said that bakcwards, got the prop off but can't get shaft out is what you mean right, right.
I'm not sure but think you have to remove the shifter fork before you can get the gears out.

Ok, you have removed the nut and taken the prop off. What else have you done? You must remove the gearcase from the power head to proceed from here. Do you have a manual? I would suggest you not do anything else until you have one. Follow the steps for gearcase removal and then disassembly. It is work but not extremely complex.
