Re: helpppp! mariner 3.5

yeah obviously thankyou but it was hard to find a manual and it is on way in post
on the top of the tank there is four triangle shaped plates with bolt holes in the middle of them and they are for where the recoil bolts on but one of the traingle plates has lifted slightly and when the tank is filled with fuel after a few hours when gas pressure builds up it leaks a small amount of fuel

Jim, it's difficult to say without seeing the problem but I have soldered may cracked tanks over the years with a large iron. If doing the job yourself use care--Bob

Many times the heat of welding can cause a problem that soldering don't but in some cases one can spot it with a welder and then plug the pin holes by soldering over the top, if you have room for fender washers under the starter and usually there is clean the area well and sweat solder them on to the top of the tank to spread the load out

the problem hole is that the previous owner was a bit over the top with bolting down the recoil and what has happened is the he went through the the tank with the bolt and my soldering iron is to big to get some solder down it

Re: helpppp! mariner 3.5

Just a couple more thoughts, would it be possible to remove(maybe drill it out) and replace the incert with a differant piece or clean up what you have and fill or seal with epoxy, if you fill the bottom of the piece with epoxy then drill and tap it?

Re: helpppp! mariner 3.5

just about to try that one i have slighlty cut back the little mount where the nut goes so i have a bit more access to the hole and i was going to solder a piece of alloy type metal right over the hole and then fill it with solder fold back over the mount metal and then spot weld the recoil to the mount but if you think the other idea of the epoxy is best i will do that instead
and just to say i am most gratefull for your help

Re: helpppp! mariner 3.5

you could try a product called pig putty it is a 2 part epoxy the you break off and kned it together kind of looks like playdough then you can press it into the hole you have and when it dries it can be drilled tapped whatever withstands heat pretty good and is gas and oil resistant just a thought
