Hesitation on starting - Mercruiser 3.0/LX

When I turn the ignition key to start, the starter will click, pause (maybe 1-2 seconds) then turn the engine. It sounds like the solinoid fires, the starter gear engages, and ther starter motor just hangs momentarily before spinning. Initially, I released the key and tried again. Then I discovered I just hold the key in the start position and the starter motor spins up. Other times, especially when warm, the starter spins immediately. Is this a symptom of a failing starter motor? If I am advised to get a new starter motor, would the affordable one from RareElectrical on eBay be a reasonable candidate? $60 seems a good price given the alternatives. I have heard carrying a spare starter motor is not a stupid idea in any event.
Any and all advice is welcome.
Thanks,

Thanks Chris. I am thinking just having a spare makes sense. I am still interested if anyone thinks my existing starter is dying.

Sounds like the contacts in the solenoid are on the way out..

It does seem like solenoid to me as well. I will remove and wire brush the contacts to eliminate the bad connection potential problem. If the hesitation continues, I should get a replacement starter as the solenoid and starter are one unit.
Thanks again Chris.
