Hey all - new boat owner here, just bout my first one 3 months ago...and now my first real problem. Let me say this website seems amazing. I have a 2000 Crownline 19' bowrider...197 hours. 4.3 Merc I/O 190 hp. Have put 30 hrs on it in the last 3 months with no issues. When I bought it in June, I had new/changed:
-4 qts new oil
-gear oil
-spark plugs
-oil filter
-fuel filter
-compression check at time of purchase was: 191/195/195/201/201/201
I've used 89 octane ethanol free at every fill up. It sits in lake water so there certainly is the expected build-up...
It started up right perfect every time. A few weekes ago it would occasionally (but rarely) sputter upon accelerating from a standstill, then would get the courage and run. It started doing this more frequently, then started stalling while idling, even though it'd started right back up. Then it began having issues starting..cranking/turning over fine, but take 10+ seconds to actually start. Still had occasional acceleration issues after starting though and now finally, it wont even start, just cranks and turns over endlessly without starting.
I'm a competent novice-intermediate "mechanic" but know much less than I actually know but regardless feel like its most likely a fuel problem i.e. clogged injector/bad fuel pump. Especially with the problem getting gradually worse, makes me think its not a timing/electrical/ignition issue.
Now to show my ignorance...this is my first boat hence all my mechannical experience being on cars/trucks. Can anyone tell me what the air intake setup is like on these? Where is the air filter and could that be the culprit? Im also ignorant to carb as i've always worked on/tinkered with FI engines. What about the buildup on the sterndrive, should this be a concern for me? Any help or input would be greatly appreciated...I can barely afford the gas for this thing let alone repairs!
