That's pretty neat, yet odd huh? I wonder what the reserve is on it. I notice zero feedback for the guy.

Now that I look at it again........I bet you can't use it on an I/O because of the cooling water return. Does that make sense?

Lets of old turbo set ups out there...it was a real popular high performance set up at one time.

Gale Banks sold a bunch of them, along with other companys.

I believe a lot of the turbo's are water cooled.

I'v seen a pair of Twin turbo charged Merc 454's in a 38 Fountian, he was pumping out over 1,000 ponies between the two engines, You should hear these puppies whine when he pushes the sticks forward, lots of torque also, he spins 33p props no problem. It seems to have been reliable, I see the boat out and about alot, and have for about 15 years.

Are the 454's I/O's? I'm wondering about the exhaust configuration? I'm going to give these guys a call. The more I look at it the more I'm interested. Just hope it's not dangerous......could it harm my newly rebuilt (by me) IL6?

It advertises 3 to 3 and 1/2 lbs of boost... That kind of boost won't damage a well tuned engine... Dangerous, nope...

It's a pretty neat deal, but IMO, it's not worth the effort.. Won't help get on plane any faster because of "turbo lag".. Creates more heat in the engine compartment.. And, although it's possible under some circumstances, I kind of doubt the claim of 20% better fuel economy..

Simple... Gas motor under boost needs more fuel..

Not worried about getting on plane faster. The boat is a '78 20' Grady White. It's not a speed boat that's for sure......but if this will push me to about 200HP and let me turn a bigger prop....then maybe I should?

I see this as a Very Reasonable Expectation............ ;)

It looks like a Draw-thru style of system......
I can't tell what the carb is in the pic....
It looks to be built nice + low to stay under the hatch.......

Yes these 454's are i/o's its all mercury set up, the turbos were available from merc, this Fountain run trs drives, I'm not sure what the stock horsepower would have been because these ones have been tweaked, but the 454 twin turbos were mostly found in larger cruisers, actually another friend of mine has a complete set up for 454 he is yet to find anybody thats interested in it, I suspect it would be due to the amount of space required in the engine compartment needed to install these setups.

hey bondo.....if it was you, would you do it?
What do you mean a "draw through system"?
Do you think I would use the same carb?

I've got a Twin Turbo 400cid Chevy that's going to set in front of a Jetdrive in the works now......... Of Course I'd Do It........... :D

Turbo's either draw air/fuel thru the Carb,
Or, Blow air into the carb.....
I'm going with Draw-thru on mine......
Do you think I would use the same carb?
It's hard to tell looking at the pic.... It Might be..??.....

OHHHHHHHH.............

I see what you mean, the carb is "before" the "fan" and the air/fuel mixture is being "sucked-thru" the carb.........

Now that you mention it, it's clearer in the pic.

Haven't been able to call these guys yet.

Let me ask a question:
If something happened to the turbo when I was out on the water........would the engine still run without the boost?

Depends................................ :D

Turbos are a Really Simple piece of Close Tolerance Machinery...........

As long as you Feed it a Steady, Solid Oil Supply........
And, Don't let any Junk in the air flow,
They are pretty much Trouble Free................

Being an Ex-Trucker,+ now ramrodding a small fleet of dumptrucks,
I've seen Millions of Miles on Turbos...........
Turbo Issues are Extremely Rare..........
If there IS an Issue,
It's a Bearing/Seal problem,+ it gives you Lots of leed time.... It'll pass Oil for awhile... Eventually Running on engine Oil in the intake.........
It's All about the "Steady, Solid Oil Supply"........ ;)

Go For It..........................

Sounds like fun Tony, it would have to be a pull through system to work with the carb. Carbs work on the venturi principle and the created pressure differential within the carb. If you tried to just blow more air into the carb it would not work properly. Some automotive carb setups had turbos on them but used a pressure box to surround the complete carb. Maseratti had a nice set up.
