This afternoon I went to a couple of medical appointments and promised my wife I would also stop at BJ's in NH to pick up a few things.

I am standing in the checkout line and my cell phone rings.

My credit union called and told me that my credit/debit card number had been compromised and the number was being attempted to be used in FIVE foreign countries and 7 various US States :eek:

The credit union was going to turn off that card and I explained where I was and what I was doing so, they gave me 10 minutes of use.

A new card and new number will be re-issued.

When I got back to my car I started thinking about my wife's account and called the credit union back. Well as it turns out the list of stolen card number's was very small and the effected people in New England had all been notified............. Okay.....how many people are we talking about in New England????........................... Just ONE!!!! ME!!!

Why can't I be so lucky in the lottery?

Re: Hey I won!!!

sounds like a fun time!! Sorry your going through that.

Reminds me of a funny story. Wife and I had a last minute change of vacation plans 2 years ago. Instead of Scottsdale Az we ended up in Cabo San Lucas Mexico. We have 2 credit cards, and our debit card. each time I used a card they shut them off. So the 2nd attempt would be declined. It was obvious after the second card went inactive what was happening. I did not want to spend a bunch of time on the phone trying to unravel things, so I attempted to work through it via E-mail. It took like 3 days. Luckily we had enough cash to get by.

Funny part was when we got home, there were 3 messages from all 3 banks telling us if we didn't call them back in 2 hours or less they were going to shut off our cards. LOL!! Primary contact number was my cell phone. Nowadays, we make dang sure to inform them when we leave the country.

I've had that happen a couple times traveling across country... Sorry about your cards being turned off Mr Fishrdan, we left you mess ages at HOME that we were going to shut them off. Well, lots of good those home messages do me thousands of miles away... I told them to put a note on my account that I travel a lot so hotel and gas charges away from home is normal, haven't had a problem since then.

I've had my CC number compromised 2 times, same card. First time they called and asked if I had purchased a bunch of camera equipment from Brazil, Brazil??? Second time they just cancelled the card and issued another without a reason why, besides the card being compromised.

Re: Hey I won!!!

Thankfully, I keep my cell phone number on record for all the important stuff (banking-medical etc)and bless the credit union since they stay on top of those things (being friends with all the staff and worker's is also helpful).

I spent last night reviewing my purchases and I did not see anything strange and my money is still there.

It is just a creepy feeling. The plans are to play the lottery this weekend........

Re: Hey I won!!!

Congrats on your uniqueness! I had to get a new card last year because somehow mine got compromised related to a real estate transaction I was involved in. I noticed little $15 charges on my bill I didn't make. My practice of checking out every single purchase on my statement really paid off!

I think what happened was this: someone called me impersonating one of the people involved in the transaction, and knew many of the other names involved, including those of my brother and sister. Believing it was legitimately the person I trusted, I gave my cc#. Had to be some kind of an inside job. I didn't have to pay any of the charges I claimed I didn't make.

On a side note, I've been way more impressed with the credit union I've been with for 33 years than any of the banks that have come and gone in my life during that time.

The compromised card thing always worries me when overseas for business. Not happened yet but I always have my back up card with me just in case.

Re: Hey I won!!!

Got a call a few weeks ago. Massive charges on my debit from England. Glad they called. Ended up not losing any money but had to wait several weeks for a new card. Lucky for me the bank did not approve any of those charges before they called me.

Ha! Exact same thing happened to us a few years ago, and we had been to Cabo as well. I didn't disover the issue until I tried to get a beer in DFW (I think) on the way home and my card was declined. Since then I've always notified them too. Good to know they're watching out for me like that.

Re: Hey I won!!!

wow, that sucks. It definitely happens though. I was going to play golf once with a couple of co-workers one time and one's card was declined. We all just got paid so she called her CC company and they said they put a hold on it because some $400-500 purchases had been made in other states while normal use continued in Nor Cal. At least you got a courtesy call before they shut it off.

Good luck on the lottery!

About a year ago I had my business c/c compromised. Luckily, they only were able to get about $700 in around $100 increments before I caught it. Hopefully your bank or CU takes care of the charges like mine did, even though the reality is we all end up footing the bill in the end.

Well the credit union said the theft occurred between 2/12 and 6/12. During that time I used my card in every state from NY to FL and NH/MA. Those are where I used it in person not to mention my internet shopping.

I can't possibly be the ONLY person in NE collecting the parts to manufacture a Large Hadron Collider for personal use :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider

A guy has to have a hobby!
