i have an 1985 Mariner 115 HP motor. it starts good but the idle is high 1200 RPM and i get a little grinding changing gears. i cant seem to figure out how to lower the idle. there is a small screw with a nut on the top of the motor by the flywheel. i can adjust that some i can push that laver and get the motor rpm down but once i put it in gear it dont come back down.

Post pictures of the linkage and we can point out the correct places to adjust it.

I just can't find a good picture.

You might be thinking the correct place...

Might have to adjust the cable. You should be able to put it in gear without moving the carb butterflys. If the cable is too tight it will shift and advance throttle at the same time.

There is an idle stop screw adjustment on the throttle arm. It should be near where the throttle cable attaches on the bottom. Loosen it and adjust the throttle cable to push the throttle closed until the motor idles at about 1000RPM on the flusher, or 900RPM in the water. Hopefully you have not changed the timing of the motor.

BTW- the gears will grind when shifting at that high RPM you see now.

well i am posting a couple of pictures trying to clear this up. on the picture throttle issue 2, that is where the lever sits in neutral. the black linkage moves about a 3/8 inch with your fingers easily back and forth. i am not sure if that is normal. on the other picture when the idle is high if you push the bracket with tho screws on it to the left it will indeed idle lower. where is the timing adjust so i dont mess that up. the motor fires instantly when cranked. i just took the boat out this weekend it runs fine, if i give it full throttle it will in deed run fast. i did a compression test this weekend when i replaced the plugs. each cylinder has 125 psi. i am not sure if that is standard.

Have you tried adjusting the trunnion on the cable.---That is the achor point for the cable.---You have to flip the latch over to get the trunnion out.---Bottom left hand corner in picture # 2

I lifted the keeper for the cable. I can't seem to see how to screw it. Does the entire cable have to turn also.

???----You have to disconnect the very end of the cable.----Then it should all be very clear on how to do this.

You gotta unhook the cable keeper and get to the brass part and then screw the brass in or out to push the cable. you should have slight pre load keeping the idle screw against the stop. That's the lower one in your second picture.
