Castrol Pyroplex blue.
Smear some on the side of your outdrive. At the end of a season of boating, there will still be a blue smear.

That is the kind of stuff you need on those splined shafts. Same goes for the flywheel coupler shafts. Something with some sticking power.

Re: High or low profile OMC electric shift

Finished going trough the upper and mounted back on the boat. Went to bench test my lower before mounting back on and found that I had no forward gear engaging. Started to diagnose issue and found that the wiring harness was too far gone and had come apart at the forward gear coil. I am having issues removing the first coil and was wondering. If there is a trick to pulling it from the housing.I have the snap ring removed and cannot Pull the coil

reverse gear is the first gear that you can get to (in the rear of the lower) To get the forward coil out , you have to remove the vertical driveshaft, and of course to do that , the reverse gear has to be out - it should just pull right out with little effort.

But before you go tearing into that , I would make dang sure that its not some other electrical problem or a grounding issue. there is a special tool required to remove the vertical driveshaft and you can NOT reuse the nut holding it in place.

Actually. had it backwards. I have no reverse and the rear coil which is described above is the one I cannot get out due to corrosion. the wire at the coil came apart about 1/2" where it goes into the coil. Is it ok to solder and run a new wires or should I replace the coil? I did apply 12v on that little bit of wire and was able to engage reverse

I've never tried to solder one , I would think if you have enough good wire coming out of the coil you should be OK.

Soldered it and reinstalled back into the housing and is working great. My next question is what is supposed the keep the coil in place when engaged? seems like it wants to spin and twist the wire up. Also is there a trick to removing the nut inside the housing to get at the forward gear assembly.

yeah there is a trick and a special tool involved, i cant remember the exact part number but its basically a socket that holds the vertical driveshaft in place so you can remove the nut.

But if the forward is gear is shifting fine ..... why are you trying to remove it ?

Re: High or low profile OMC electric shift

I was able to get the nut off by using my old water pump shaft and vise grips. I pulled it because the forward gear didn't seem to engage like the reverse did. After pulling it out found the wire was short to ground On the case housing. Repaired forward wire and seems to be working much better. Now I just need to try and put all the vertical shaft rollers back back in not having fun with them. Also my last concern is the reverse coil staying in place when energized, seems like the coil wants to spin and twist the wire.

Use vasoline to hold the roller bearings in place. Like I said earlier too , you have to use a new nut on that driveshaft

I will try the gasoline instead of grease. I did read that about the nut and my understanding is that it is coming with the reseal kit.

Besides the transom seal is there other ways to take on water from the drive?

If your shift wires don't have the heavy sheath on them where they pass through the intermediate housing, you could get water coming in through there too. The wires have a couple of "plug" type areas built into the sheath. One of those is there to plug the intermediate.
