I have a 351 cleavland with an outdrive made by POWER MARINE, yes that is the name of the maker, i have talked with boat machanics who have been working on boats for 25 years and they have never seen a stern drive like mine. i had ti do major overhualing of the boat and engine, wires, seals, steering. never worked on a boat before but no one will work on it, they have never seen one like mine. now took it on the water and at low rpm's it drives but when i hit the throttle it feels like its slipping, it won't move. i replaced the prop with a new one and thought that was the problem. it wasn't still doing it, what could it be?...PLEASE HELP no mechanics near me will work on it, but i will !!!!!!

Re: High rpm outdrive slipping

I havent ever heard of it either. :) Im also not really well versed on the subject, but I had an outboard that was doing thes same thing.

It ended up being the clutch in the lower unit. It would act like it was cavitating, then suddenly engage. Once it was engaged everything was fine until I stopped and started again.

Hope this helps and welcome to Iboats.

Re: High rpm outdrive slipping

thnx, but that doesn't sound like mine. this is my first boat and it looks like it has a transmission behind the engine and if i put it in foward it moves fine, the engine is strong and it all sounds fine, then when i hit the trotle, slow or fast it sounds like its slipping and the engine revs but the boat won't go faster, it slows untill i back off the trottle and bring the rpms down. looked for trans fluid fill hole? is there one? this is a 1977 t-craft 26 foot offshore, center console boat. engine runs sweet. just not moving at higher rpms My 351 cleavland has a sterndrive made by POWER MARINE , and i looked for info and never found one hit on that company, PLEASE I NEED HELP!!!! thnx

Re: High rpm outdrive slipping

I'm wondering if your outdrive may have been remanned by a place named "Power Marine". The set up you are describing sounds a lot like the old Mercruiser TR drives, with a Borg Warner gear between the outdrive and the engine. Can you post some pictures of the drive and gearbox?
I've been a marine mechanic for a lot of years myself, and have never heard of that type drive.
The transmission could be your problem though, if it's got clutches in it similar to the Borg Warner gear.
Sounds like your other problem is going to be finding parts for something that no one has ever heard of.

Re: High rpm outdrive slipping

IMHO One of three things.
1- Spun prop hub. To check Put a line across the props hub with a magic marker. Then run it until you feel it “slip” then recheck your hub marks.
2- Burned clutch in the drive. Drain fluid and look for metal.
3- Spun coupler. If you do not have a transmission and just have a bell housing (like most I/O’s) there is a drive shaft coupler inside that connects the motor to the drive. If the teeth of the coupler or drive shaft have worn down they will spin when they should be locking up.
If possible with the motor off try to put it gear then see if you can spin the prop by hand.

Re: High rpm outdrive slipping

I have some pictures but how do i post them, there is some type of gearbox or transmission between the engine and outdrive, i put it in gear with engine turned off, and the prop spins freely, but in the water you can feel it engage and then when yougive it throttle the engine revs but the prop doesn't spin fast, it somehow slipping. But i have tried everything, and i don't know how to post pics. I i post pics and someone can help me i would be greatful. thnx, david

hello
star power marine made a lot of those. a velvet drive clutch in front of a drive that looks very similar to a volvo penta 280. they even used a marinized 7.9 international disiel in front of a few. have you checked the fluid filter in the clutch? do you have a service manual?

David
You can email me the pictures and I can post them here. Just make sure each picure is less than 100KB's and in JPG format, don't even think about sending them in bitmap format, I would be forced to hunt you down like a dog..... :D

Re: High rpm outdrive slipping

look over the transmission and find the label plate. post all the info off the plate. and your prop still has a rubber hub that could be bad. if the fluid filter is clogged or the clutches burned you will get the same symptoms.
try to post pics as well

Man.. Is that a salt water vessel? I guess I am only used to looking at freshwater boats, and have never seen anything quite that rusted before.

I wish you well on getting it fixed and running properly.
